Hi. One place to look would be "The carving path" forum
The Carving Path - The Carving Path
- the carvers who do miniature are fond of carving insects , hope you find something usefull there

Have you got a Latin, proper name, for the Richmond butterfly? I have an idea, a concept, for a story pole (as opposed to a totem pole) with a butterfly.
My idea is still a bit fuzzy in my head. Expect western red cedar carving, the butterfly should be 30x20cm (I hope). PM if you have ideas off topic.
You ought to be able to find all sorts of "bug books" with pictures.

I reckon it'd be a difficult challenge to depict the delicate wings of a butterfly using wood but good onya for giving it a crack. Let alone all the other characteristics of the Richmond butterfly how are you going to replicate its colour? Here's a couple of links to whet your appetite if it isn't that way anyhow:

springwater: thanks for the links. No idea they were endangered. Time to fill the garden with weeds!
It's a concept of mine at the moment, to do a story of the "Westcoast Painted Lady" butterfly. Interesting in that it is a migratory species, from our Pacific coast to the interior mountains where I live.
I will attempt to convey the basic pattern, the appearnance, of the wings with such things as abalone shell and shale stone. Possibly 30 x 20 cm, in western red cedar. I have no misconception regarding the delicacy of the wings, maybe 6-12mm western red cedar slab, depends on what I can split out of a log with success.
