Default The Saburr Tooth Rotary Wheels for new carver?

    Morning all.

I am toying with the idea of carving a full sized copy of my wife's dog in a sitting position. This will mean the piece will have an over all height of around 600mm and be around 550 at the base, plus a little extra for the tail.

I'm thinking of attempting this from either White Cedar ( as I have a suitable piece) or Camphor Laurel (plenty, plenty), but either way there will be some serious timber to remove before getting down to any detailed work. It's probably a somewhat daunting project as my first full carving attempt, but that's the way I roll.

I'm familiar with the Arbortech carving accessories and have used the Industrial Shaper and the Tuff Cut wheels in roughing out some bowls etc - both with good success. I'm now interested to try the Saburr Tooth rotary wheels to see how these go.

I recently bought one of the little Proxxon long neck grinders and fitted one of their own 50mm shaping wheels, which seem to be very similar to the Saburr Tooth wheels. I was quite impressed with the results, but unfortunately the Proxon range only has one carving wheel. The Saburr Tooth range seems much more extensive, with both 50mm and 100mm wheels in a variety of grades (fine, medium, coarse) and profiles of round and flat.

I think these are probably more common in USA, but they are imported by Jim Carrol as part of his range, so maybe someone here has some experience or feedback they are willing to share. All comments and advice will be appreciated.

I have attached a link to the Saburr Tooth wheels at the CWS site here.

l would cut most away with a saw and then use 100mm carving disc then 100mm sanding disc 16g then use the mini disc carver and then chisel away
