We are sailing
I started these out to be rough and quick for a kids dam party - they stayed rough but not quick to do, although the time spent was well worth the appreciation factor from the kids .... and adults. The bows are white beech with some beetle damage which added to the look. Sails are an old shopping bag, cap visors sport the stern.

We took them to the free Nimbin pool this weekend and all the boys there really went for them and spent time with them. They wanted them just to go like every toy just goes when you press a button. They were blowing in the sails to make them go - INTO the wind! They worked it out after a while. They do rocket along quite well, I must say, thanks to the lightweight white beech - a traditional ship timber. I've learnt a lot for when I get the time to do them neatly. The kids ram and submerge though, so I may not bother. The silver tape is a bit embarrassing and probably not necessary - just there to stop the unfinished front ends of the bamboo outriggers.

Brilliant! You've inspired me now... I've got 3 grandsons that age who will love the idea!

No, the dam party was a few weeks ago now, but you should have been there. My friend B... had built a platform with a flying fox going over the dam, a diving board off a new suspended pontoon, a bamboo raft and a tarzan swing off the crane on his converted 1960's firetruck - 70 kids at one stage all day in about 38degres in a beautiful gully below the Nightcap Range!
Whittling; a tomahawk is great for hollowing out. I also have a curved hand adze, but a good bent gouge chisel will give you the miles. Get a whole branch and carve it out in one section before cutting the branch - gives better stability options.
