    Default My Latest Santa

Here's my latest Santa, special order from a good customer. He stands 9.25 inches (235mm) tall, carved from basswood, and painted with acrylic paints.

That's a nicely carved traditional whittling , you've caught the spirit perfectly.
It may very well just be a photography thing but I personally prefer the paint a little thinner so that more wood shows through.( like I say it may well do so in real life ! Painted wood , I know is pretty hard to capture on a photo.

I agree about the thinner paint, Mike; I prefer using wash coats also. Most of my customers, however, prefer the more opaque painting... Since basswood has almost no visible grain, it probably doesn't matter. When I carve something with nice grain such as walnut, maple, cherry, etc., I don't paint at all.
