    Question Sharpening carving tools

One of the reasons I haven't kept up with my wood carving projects, is because I am not confident in sharpening my carving tools.

Does anyone know a club or person who can teach me how to do this? I really don't think it is something you can learn from a book.

I'm based in Melbourne, eastern suburbs.

    Regards
    Sandra

Sandra, drop a line to Neil Ellis the owner of this B/Board and carving specialist who used to run courses.
He's generally most accommodating with any queries.
    Cheers

Sandra, I belong to Central Woodcraft at Manningham. They have three day classes on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Friday mornings, and Third Thursday evenings. We meet at Templestowe. Any of the leaders will be happy to show you sharpening. Having said that, I learnt about sharpening from Neil Ellis. He is now in Geelong, but I don't know whether he is still teaching sharpening. You certainly can't do better than getting taught by Neil.
As well, I have learnt that like most skills, sharpening carving tools takes practice. In my humble opinion, you need to accept that you will muck up a few times while learning to sharpen, and then eventually you get it right. I avoided using some tools for a long time because I was worried about how to sharpen them, and that held back a lot of my carving. All I can say is give it a go.
