    Default snoey river horseman

100_1535.jpg100_1536.jpghaveing another go at a bit of carving, this one is in jeletoun, and is of the horseman going down the hill after the wild bush horses,I have done a couple like it before, but this one I've done so that it is cut right through (I call it a pierced carving, what would you call it?) and being in jeletoun that is a bland timber I'm tossing up weather or not to seal it then paint it , like I've seen on US and english sites ( comments? please) as you can see it it a work in progress and will post new photos as I get further in to it. CD.

G'day CD. You're off to a good start.
It's looking good and I love the theme.
    I'm along for the ride.

    good start.
As a piece of advice, don't go too further in details before setting the main volumes.

Default snowey river horseman finished (sort of)?

as you can see I've not smoothed it, and added a bit of burning around the edges for a bit of contrast, as for the (sort of) well I have a heap of carvings hanging up on the walls here at home and others at my two sons place, and nobody gives them a second glance after a while, so I have decided to turn this one into somthing every one will look at quite often a "A WALL CLOCK" picture next time. just noticed the date on the photo, that is because I didn't adjust the date when I recharged the batteries of the cameraCD

That's looking really great. I love it.
That rough-hewn look really suits it and the burning around the edges accentuates the form well.

I'm not sure if I'd turn it into a clock though. I reckon it's fine as it is. (But what do I know - I've never been accused of having good taste. )

    Thumbs up

That is looking like a real cracker of a piece!!

Maybe rather that paint you could use various shades of boot polish
to highlight the parts you want to stand out.

I reckon it looks great, with the darker edge throwing the spotlight where it should be, i.e. the centre.
The highlight on on the reins is a nice touch also.
Turning it into a clock would not be my choice , but that's just me.

I like it just the way it is, maybe some shadowing with boot polish on cotton buds, as suggested.

If you turned this into a clock of some sort,
I get the message that the carving is/was distasteful
and you hoped that you could "fix it" by turning it into something else.
So, I'd take a second look, wondering : "what's wrong with it?"

I've given a few carvings to my GF, ones that she's asked for and not many at that. I've never caught her standing and staring at any of them. How long others spend studying, and admiring possibly, my carvings, I don't care.

Great carving, not a great clock, just my opinion. It is a great show also.

YES WELL.I'm afraid that I had already made it into the clock, before I got back to read your comments fella's. as I have not added the numbers, I don't think that it detracts from the carving, HOW EVER, if I was to remove it I can put a plug in the hole Maybe make it in to a saddle bag? Here is a shot of it with the clock hands.
O and I forgott to mention that the bridle and reins are saddle makers cotton. more comments are quite welcome, CD.

That looks fine without numbers. I could look at that for a very long time.

Does anyone else think that the second hand reminds them of their mortality
or is it just me? I'm doing well now to remember that it's Tuesday.

I remember a shot like that in the movie. Flood of memories.
What spare time I had at Uni (PhD/LaTrobe) was spent mostly in the Snowy Mtns
up behind Mansville, and up onto the Bogong High Plains. Bagged Bogong (winter) the night the Americans
first landed on the moon. I had never chopped so many ice steps at the top of the Devil's Staircase.

I'll bow to your better taste, CD. As a clock, it does look good.
I was wrong, the hands don't detract from the carving at all.
I like it as is, without numbers too.

RV, I don't need a second-hand to remind me of my mortality. I'm too aware of it already.

the carving is nice, full of energy. It works quite well as a clock, but something catch my eye...
Because of the bigger flat area on the bottom, I wonder if it wouldn't be better straight than in this "diamond" position ?

That is super impressive. You have captured the scene from the movie so well.
