Getting started in spoon carving, and wish to attend a course around Sydney, if any are available. Anyone know what is available? Lots in UK I see on the Web, a bit far...
Thanks

Spoon carving courses around Sydney
G'day Peter
depending on where you are in Sydney, why don't you just turn up at one the Sydney Woodcarving Group meetings? They'll be happy to get you started.
The SWG get together generally twice a month, but given there are four locations, you should be able to pick sessions that suit. There is a small annual membership fee, plus a nominal contribution for coffee and bickies provided each time you attend, so it's not going to break the bank!
Have a look at Home Page for locations and timings.
cheers
Peter

Thanks for the info, I am aware of SWG, and could not get onto the website because my virus checker would not let me. Seems the problem is fixed now. I, probably mistakenly, thought they were into other forms of carving, eg relief and sculpture.
I actually live a 10min walk to one of the meeting locations, worth a trot down.
Thanks again

You are probably right that most of the SWG folks would be involved in some form of sculpture or relief carving, but that is not to say they cannot assist with spoon carving. Most experienced carvers would be able to carry out such a project with a reasonable outcome I would guess.
I would suggest you just tell them what you are interseted in and bring along some photos or better still an example if you have one.
By the by, I wish I was only a 10min walk away !!
Good luck

Hi Ian, han't seen you for a while, I must read the Sturt brochures more carefully! There are dozens of utube videos, but having someone comment on your actual carving shortens the learning curve, especially for clumsy cack-handers like me. Have you tried the Liogier rasps? Interested to see what you thinnk compared to the Auriou.
Cheers

Hi Peter
yes I know, my Tuesday nights have become busy with kid's sport but must try and get to a TTTG meeting sometime this year
Have you tried the Liogier rasps? Interested to see what you thinnk compared to the Auriou.
However, from what I've read on the web, the Liogier, Auriou, and I think two other European brands of rasps are pretty close to each other in terms of performance and feel. The review that sticks in my mind rated the Liogier rasps as better than the Auriou -- I don't recall what the criteria was that made the Liogier "better" -- but what did stick in my mind was a comment along the lines that if you had one or more Aurious, the reviewer didn't think the performance difference would justify replacing them
I like my Aurious, and am very happy with them. When it comes time to get another one or two I might give the Liogiers a go.
