making stuff in NZ
just got back from 2 weeks of making things in NZ
BIG FUN
70 artists/ craftists from all over the world get together every two years,
amazing location, everything supplied to play with, wood, metal, glass, ceramics, painting, turning,,jewelry, printmaking etc etc.
the idea is that you collaborate on pieces (start something then pass it on to someone else) or plan projects with a bunch of people with different specialities.
NO rules, NO agendas
and then it all gets auctioned at the end to fund the next one.
lots of work, lots of laughs, lots of beer
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

When I die (no hurry here), my paradise is gonna be a place like that
It's a slow and painful process...the secret is, dont mind the pain.(Ian Norbury)

That looks like great fun! Where exactly is it, and what's it called? Nice work too, it doesn't look rushed. Are any of these works some you personally worked on, underfoot?
I was looking at that shot of a bench full of grinders etc, would a WH&S nightmare over here!! "Have you been trained on the safe usage?", "where's your documentation?", "are they tag tested? blah blah"...the sort of thing that we are increasingly put through running a summer arts school. May be different there, I have an uncle from NZ staying for a few days and yesterday he mentioned a 'No blame' clause or something with regards public liability. I get the feeling you can't sue because of your own negligence or stupidity... now that sounds like paradise!!
Thanks for posting.Andy Mac

Wow!
That's some fantastic work
Are all those pieces made within two weeks or did some people bring works already in progress? (I just ask because if those are in two weeks I work really slow)
Thanks for the pics

Undie, what a great program, would love to be involved in something like that. I am sure I can see quite a bit of your influence in some of those pieces. Great Stuff.

That last pic looks familiar. (perky too. ) That really does look like fun. Can I come next time? :cute: I'll do pottery if they don't think I'm a wood turner/worker.

the NZ thing is called "collaboratioNZ", it's one of a number of these things held all around the world,
it started with the "Emma lake project" http://www.saskcraftcouncil.org/emma04/index.htm in Saskatchewan Canada in the early eighties
a bunch of artist/craftists from all over the place were invited to participate, they took the idea back home with them and started their own.
there are two happening in Australia soon I think(smaller scale) one's in Bunbury WA ,the other is in Bowral NSW, (I'll see if I can find some info)
they all vary slightly in structure and amount of participants, some are invite only and some are "first in, first served".
all of them have some paid "resource artists" and other participants pay. in NZ it was about 50/50.
all good big fun I always come away buzzing with a head full of new skills,
and I'm off to the Canadian one next year yahooo!!!

here's a bit about previous oz collaborations,
I think Mike Hosaluk (the guy that started the whole thing) will be at the 09 one in Bowral.
(I think 09 is already fulled up)

btw, interestingly, this gig is not for everyone, if you're really precious about your work you may have some difficulties spending hours on a piece only to have someone paint pink polkadots over your highly fiddlebacked blackwood , or running it through a bandsaw,
personally I love it it's the best therapy for "letting go"
