Suppliers in South Sydney, Australia
Hi all. I'm an absolute beginner in wood carving, deciding to try my hand at chip carving and whittling, with the plan of slowly trying out other styles as I gain experience over the years.
Anyway, from the info I've gathered from here it seems the best type of wood to start whittling with, (for an aussie), would be stuff like Camphor Laurel, Jelutong, White Beech, English Lime, etc...
My question is where's a good place to find this stuff, (for someone located south of sydney)? Trend Timbers looks like the perfect place, but that's a pretty long driver for me, (I'm in Helensburgh, so it could be close to 2 hours if the traffic is bad).
I received a couple of nice pfeil carving knives as a gift, and then I made the mistake of getting some pine from Bunnings... I'm finding that about all it's good for is developing my forearms ... (of course my current complete lack of skill might also have something to do with it)
Any help / pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Camphor or Poplar are the two easiest timbers to get hold off. Especially Camphor as it is a weed.
As Ray mentioned the Illawarra Woodies have broken for our Xmas break, but the workshop will be open on Saturday 16/01/10 and we will have a stall at the Dapto markets Friday 22 and Saturday 23/01/10. A few of us muck around with carving and one of our members is very good at it and more importantly quiet a good teacher of the craft.Pat

Anagote Timbers are in Marrickville. I havent been there for a while so I dont know what they have in stock but have always had good treatment there.

thanks for all the responses guys. I will most definitely check out the Illawarra Woodies when they're back from their break. Thanks also Sebastiaan56... Anagote Timbers looks a lot closer than other options. Cheers.

What sort of quantity are you after? I have some white beech that can be posted quite cheaply as it is so lightweight. However I can source quite a bit of wood up here and because I work at a wholesale native plant nursery up here (near Nimbin) I can throw some stuff in the semi when it delivers in Sydney - he gopes through to Melbourne as well. It would just be a matter of leaving at a nursery we delver to. I think we deliver to a place in Heathcote which is close by Helensburgh I think. I have a source here that I was getting white beech (cut and immunized 50 years ago which means its as dry as you'll get White beech which dries very slowly.) I don't know what he has left - was also some good red cedar carving blocks among other things that he has collected over years, such as vine formed trunks (spiralled).

Thanks mate... really appreciate the generosity. But no need at the moment... I'll be out Marrickville way on Tuesday anyway and so am gonna check out Anagote Timbers. Plus I'm really only just starting out so don't want you wasting good timber on me yet, (although I might take you up on the offer in the future if it still stands). Cheers
