    Hi Terry.

Thanks for the link, interesting to see what he did with a skew blade. I wonder whether the degree of hardness varies a lot depending on the age/origin of the nuts.

You seem interested, and I know you have good skills.

Would you show us how it is done if I gave you one to try?

Whittling, are you lurking? The offer is there for you also.

A word of warning though: maybe it is too hard for you "softies"...

You are correct, to hard for me.
Although the type of carving does interest me and down the track I think that I will join you,but not just now.
Still trying to perfect my skills with wood.

Keep showing your progress, I am really enjoying this thread.

That's ok, Terry, the way I am going I might still have some around by the time you feel up to it... I have tried with a skew chisel but I can not get it to cut, it just takes off small chips with the point, like using marble. Hence my attempt with a burin.

Very nice Mark! I like the way you have handled your nuts there. Keeping the skin on works really well!

That reminds me. I'll have to get to mine. I watched KenW do one. So I'd better have a go now.

Can't say I've gotten very far either. All I've managed is to cut a patch of the brown off about the size of a 5 cent piece. Its hard alright... but I think its carvable with a blade. (There's always power if all else fails).

My biggest problem, aside from the time to do it, is finding a design that isn't going to break into the cavity in the middle. Still looking for something suitable. Will stay in touch as and when things develop.

    Nice boxes BTW Mark.

Yep, nice boxes Mark (we won't quibble about turning v carving...) Is the black lid a stained part of the nut itself?
