What tools do I need to buy?
I am retyping this as it didn't seem to come up on the board after I posted.
I would like to carve a set of elephant book ends for the babies room (arrives in march) and a stock for my farm rifle. The only woodworking tools I have are orbital sanders, GMC jigsaw and a dremel.
I am unsure which tools carving tools I need to buy, do I need the type you hit with a mallet or ones that you push by hand. For the bookends I would like to use wood from the farm, we have gum (red and others), maybe some almond and some pine.
The bookends I would like to do something similar to this:
A photo of the type of rifle stock I would like to make is below.

All of the above tools will be useful, the dremel is great with burrs for hollowing and organic shapes as long as the work isnt too heavy. It partly depends on how big these are but you dont actually need gouges, add some files and rasps to your kit and you could muddle through.

a 100mm angle grinder with 36 grit sanding disc should work for the gunstock
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

I thought I would need something like this?
I am happy to buy some tools, so if someone wast to give me a suggested list (and an idea on where to buy) I would go shopping. I am not sure of what size rasps etc. I know as little about woodworking as you can probably get.

Local hardware is a good start for rasps and files, size depends on how big your hands are and the size of the job. I mainly use 12in rasps for rough shaping after cutting out the blank and then smoother single or double cut files and sandpaper. Dremel burrs are useful for compound curves and hard to reach spots,Typhoon and Kutzall are both good and can be got through a google search or ebay.
