Totem Pole Carver Jack W Burgess
Jack Burgess is in the process of carving one of the animal motifs on the totem pole. The tree is a Western Red Cedar imported from Canada to the USA. Locating a suitable old growth tree that was naturally felled and accessible in BC took many months but was worth the wait. Notice no knots or other disfigurements in this area.
This was a large commission both in terms of process and in terms of $$. Even though I am an accomplished carver, carving a totem pole of this size, working with a different medium "wet Western Red Cedar" and carving a totem pole as it is laying horizontal were new to me.
I did weeks of research, called other totem carvers from the Northwest, looked at images from books, magazines and on the web. I downloaded more than 1000 images to study and show my client. Finally selecting our favorite 20 totem pictures. We decided to carved the totem deeply, up to 8 inches and not use any paint at all.

welcome ...and look forward to having your input into this forum...
cheers underfoot

Thank you ‘underfoot’ for the reply and advice. I understand what you are saying. I will always reply to any artist or commenter in the 1st person. I have been trying to learn and develop self-publishing on the web. Hopefully by interacting with artisans, craftspeople and others to promote the business side as well as promote camaraderie with fellow carvers, artists and those interested self-publication.
My artistic career has taken me down many paths while trying to earn a living doing what I love. Teaching, galleries, shows, installations, artist groups, workshops, commissions and all manner of interaction are useful experiences.
Learning the intricacies of web interaction and promotion is a new venture. The more we as artist and individuals open ourselves to being seen, the more time spent responding to the attention we generate. It can be a two edged sword trying to work and promote. For me, creating a balance is a ‘process’ no different than art is a ‘process’. Learning about each community, whether a physical place, country or web affiliation is different and every venue has its establishment, creators, leaders etc.
Your work, conveys to me an immensely visual and intricate view of nature and humanity and I value having your input. Thanks again.
