Towel Rack (for really small towels) - WIP
What with the runaway success of the fruit bowl, i thought I'd extend my rather practical range of "stuff to place thoughtfully around the house". I've identified a gap in the market for towel racks (for really small towels) and so I'm hoping to position myself right at the fore front of this, um, bespoke and highly useful product crisis thingy. Screw the GFC - people want this!!!
Im starting with an aquatic theme…why not?
The clay model came later, but offers some insight into the intended outcome. I only did the torso as Im pretty lazy and the head was sort of done by this stage anyway.

The head is the most superfluous part, but a critical feature in the scheme of things.
Heads are hard.

Then onto the easy part...

...doesn't look there yet but give it a few months...

Wow, that's really out there, love it, similar to Gehard Demetz and his block children. What wood are you using for your
blocks?

Yeah Demetz...someone else pointed that out and I did look him up, well anyone called Demetz seems to be a champion carver. There's a whole clan of them. The gaps are kind of central to everything though. (better aeration - faster drying towels!)
It's poplar. They come in little strips and boards from Masters.
Seb, Copeau - thanks.

Well, it's certainly going to be the most creative towel rack I have seen, there's also another spot in the lower section you could extend for a small towel but a bit risque. I have looked at Poplar in Masters before, it's quite pricey, looks ok to carve though.

Well I could move into an adult range perhaps? certainly a lot of innuendo about 'wood' gets bandied around!
Poplar isn't cheap. My tiny armful cast about $120. It's pretty firm (much more than I was expecting) and seems to take detail ok. For a mining outpost - at least there are a few options.

Without a doubt, you are the master of glue-ups! I wish I could get the hang of that cause it really expands where you can go with subject size an matter. The concept looks really interesting too. I'm glad someone else on this forum favours poplar. It may not be huon pine but its pretty good if you don't want too fine a detail. I've only ever bought it once though. It's pretty easy to find growing here in SA. I use it in my schools as students find it easy to work and easy to find supplies of it later.

Hi Raav.
Excellent work. Is your glue-up similiar to ship figurehead carving. I'm interested in life sized carvings. There is a lot poplar here in my part of the states. We call them Tulip trees and they're our state tree. Indiana, USA. Andy

Andy - I couldn't tell you a thing about figureheads, so i don't really know. As for life size carving - avoid. Just avoid!
Whittling - thanks. Glueing adds another level of tedium and time, but also allows a breakdown of complexity into manageable chunks. This project however is still freakin' me out. Like a wood puzzle that no-one else can solve....but perhaps that's carving in general?
poplar tree got blown over in a recent storm. It was largely woodchipped before I chanced upon it. So annoying!

Laminating these arms takes ages. Carving is too difficult by hand across grain. Lot of blood! Dremel is finally paying it's way. Hands are working out ok.
Did I mention anatomy was hard?

It'll be about 800mm high including a plinth type base. Really small towels!
Such is my naivety I figured smaller would be easier, but the face wasn't by any stretch and neither the hands.
