    Default walnut

i have a tree, about 7ft long and 20cm diametre in my shed as well as other smaller chunks, but the thing is i have had some trouble carving in the past ( ie. carving when i should have sawn o.O) and i was wondering if i should use this wood of if there is a better beginners wood. plus i am unsure whether it has been dried properly, it was cut down about a year ago.

As much as I love walnut and it is one of my favorite woods for carving, its not because its the easiest wood to carve . It is however a very attractive wood when finished and I like smell of it.

Its not my idea of beginners wood though, I don't know what kind of carving you plan on doing but Basswood is a pretty good wood to start out on. It has a pretty plain grain, but its a nice wood otherwise, fairly soft but dense enough to hold details well.

However if you decide to carve in the walnut keep your tools sharp.
