    Default Whittling

I have in the last few weeks bought as set of Flexcut carving knives model No KN 100. I have never been so disappointed in a purchase that was made in Australia.

All that I have read about these knives is that they are sharp and ready to use. Not so. I had to sharpen them to bring them into usable condition. Further to this the wooden handles are about the worst I have I have seen. The grain of the timber has indentations running with the grain to quite a depth. I also had to sand off the lacquer so I could grip them. As for cutting I have no complaint.

I tied to make contact with the company in America but like many companies I found it impossible so I have come to the Forum in the hope that my information will be carried through for some result.

In a nutshell, most carvers would recommend cutting/sanding off the factory handle and making your own. Basically, make a shape you like and that feels right in your hand, then split it down the middle with a bandsaw, hollow out a small area to fit the tang of the knife, then glue it back together with epoxy. I personally like the "whale tail" shape of the Flexcuts, but I know a lot of people don't, so take a couple of hours and create your own handle that you like.

If I bought a Chev or Ford I wouldn't expect to re build it when it got it home
