The Wonderful Whittler from OZ
Was in Woodford today and decided to pop in and peruse the offerings from the local art group's 'annual exhibition'
As i wandered around the various rooms of the venue i was pleasantly surprised to notice a collection of works by local whittler...Mr James (Jim) Hall,of Peachester,Sunshine Coast.
Sadly, this talented gentleman passed away a few years ago, however, his works will be housed in a newly constructed premises within the Peachester precinct, for all and sundry to admire!
His carving implements were rudimentary...but his skills were astounding.
His preferred timber of choice...White Beech
What a Wonderful Australian,Wonderful Man,and Wonderful Woodworker
Here's a few pics to enjoy...MMMapleman

Bit more info on the man himself...Mr James(Jim) Hall
Started whittling when he was 8-9 y.o and continued until he was 80y.o
Yep...70 odd years creating masterpieces in wood
He estimated that he had clocked up some 26,000 hours of whittling during this time!
And most of these were at night using a dimly lit kerosene lamp
Many of his works each took some 800 hours or about 15 months to complete
He also built an array of small machines that aided him in displaying his creations
All out of 'scraps' that were 'lying around'...ingenious!
Never offered any of his works for sale and EVERY creation he undertook was ALWAYS crafted from a single, solid piece of wood
The smallest chisel that he used was fashioned from a broken sewing machine needle
And he used a small pocket knife for creating many of his earlier works
A truly remarkable fellow indeed...MMMapleman

As i mentioned early in this thread,'Jim's' carving implements were somewhat rudimentary.
He came from a farming family that were in the true sense of the word,'battlers'!
Money was scarce...and improvisation of tools was necessary in order to save a dollar
'Jim' could ill afford sandpaper, however, this clever fellow would use the leaves of the local sandpaper fig...Ficus Coronata...to sand and deliver the smooth finish on his delightful works of art...where there's a will, there's a way ...MMMapleman
