Hi, I am a secondary school sheet metal teacher who some times teaches woodwork. I really would like to learn how to do wood carving does anyone know where to start? Or are good books or magazines worth having a look at.

Hi Johnboy, Welcome to the forum and to wood carving
Probably the best way is to find a carving club or a mentor in your area. In my case, I started carving a bit less than 2 years ago and I've just learned from you tube videos carving mags and advice from this forum. It's a great hobby for me and very challenging which I like, but just pick up a piece of softer wood, Jelutong or similar and have a go. Good luck

Hi John. Welcome to the gang.
Rob is right = the fast track is to find a club and/or a mentor.
I'm alone in my village so beyond the basics, it's been a slog.
But this forum and a couple of others have been my carving club.

There is quite a variety of carving styles, from chip to relief to chainsaws and statuary 3D of all sizes. As you can imagine, the tool set can be very different for each style.
1/2 the effort is the carving, 1/2 the effort is learning the wood and doing the design, the other 1/2 is sustaining the edges to be "carving sharp."

I encourage you to have a go at this. I didn't comprehend the satisfaction until I was off and running. I'm a retired Bio Prof.

    Default Your Area.

    Hi Johnboy,
So is your Smythes Creek, the one near Ballarat, Vic.
If so, I'm sure there are Carvers in the Ballarat Woodworkers that meet at the Airport in their Nissan Huts, & it used to be Mondays.
Google them, & you may get some info there.
    Regards,
    issatree.
