    Default Wood Spirit Bottle Stoppers

Here are a couple of wood spirit bottle stoppers that I just finished. Basswood, 2 x 2 x 3 inches (50 x 50 x 75mm), painted, except for the face with a wash coat of burnt umber acrylic paint and water. Face is natural color of the wood.

Good expression. How do you attach the corks?

I like that = clean and good color.

Is there ever any case to be made for carving more than one corner?

The corks are glued to a dowel which is glued into a hole in the bottom of the carving. The hole in the carving is 25mm (1 inch) deep, and I use a 9.5mm (.375 inch) diameter dowel. The holes come pre-drilled with the same size hole, but I have drilled recycled wine corks in the past without problem. The glue is Elmer's white glue (non-toxic).

I did one once with four faces for a Friendship Cane that was being auctioned off at the Fox Chapel Publishing open house. I've carved several with only one face and never had anyone ask for more than one face. Since it's meant to go on a bottle in a bar, only the front will be readily visible anyway...at least that's my thought on it.
