wooden bird as a friend for a stone bird
It's a birthday gift for my sister. She has a bird made of stone, and I wanted to make him a friend, more or less in the same style.
It's made of aspen, wich was quite capricious to carve. Better to be careful of the grain direction to avoid to tear off.
PS : I'll post a pict of both together once they meet.

Very cute Copeau, Just going by the photo it looks like the grain is going in a lot of different directions?

My sister was glad, she likes this kind of round and naive shapes.
Rob, thanks. Grain was quite even but a bit wavy, finally it wasn't that bad with a little care.
Midday light wasn't the best to make a photo but here are the two buddies.

Now they need an egg-shaped agate to sit between them...

I have always enjoyed the carver's selection of features that define the animal.
Only the important "bird-things" are represented.
Aspen is dreadful wood to carve, I congratulate you!
1. Can I imagine that the bird is possibly 10-15 cm in length?
2. How did you secure the wood for carving purposes?
3. The left/right symmetry is very good. Do you have some
measuring tool to keep that correct?

Angry Birds???
Every now and then I'm reminded that one doesn't need to finish with sand paper. Good job.

Thank you for comments !
Robson,
1) it's about 10-12cm... diameter !
2) It was quite rectangular at the beginning, It was hold by the front with my "carving vice"
(like this one, note it's not my carving )

I carved as much as i could, then, when I set the head features, the extra part just split off. I should have screw it underside for safety but I didn't want to make holes so I finished carefully on my knees with a leather apron (apron, is it the right word ?) to protect.
3) Symetry was done "by rule of thumb" (is that expression right (again) ? this is a google translation, we use to say "à vue de nez", "by nose sight" in french). It's good enough but fortunately you never see both sides at the same time !
Artme, I hope they won't breed. I don't feel comfortable to carve small ones with stone inlays or the opposite !
