Okay so Ive clicked the link in the other thread and the download has started.. I think.. the azureas thing has an unhappy yellow smilie which says Im connected to peers tracker is okay but I dont have any remote connection? and I may have a NAT problem if the smilie stays yellow? Whats this mean? oh and it says Ive got one seed whatever that means... but nothings coming down by the % download and done... so am I downloading or what!!

Sorry mates but Im a total bloody galah when it comes to this sorta thing!
Don't get too worried by nat poroblems and stuff. i get that and still haven't worked out why or what it all means. I turned off PC cillin for the duration (I'm still behind a router firewall) and then it semed OK. Just wait and see if you are actually downloading. Right click on the file in Azureus and go to 'Show Details'. You'll get a new tab to click on and be able to see the seeds and other peers. As long as it's dowloading something, ignore the messages.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Part 2 of Neils Vid is now seeding. As before, download the file, rename it by deleting the .txt bit after the word torrent. Then load it to your Azureus program. This should run overnight and have good distribution by the morning.

Unfortunately, all you can do now is patience. The program will work to get you the file, it just may be that there are not enough people sharing it (seeding), and you are in a queue. If it can see it, and you haven't told it to pause, it will get you the file in due course.

When you start a torrent download, it is quite unique. Normally, what we are used to when downloading a large file, is the size of the file grows larger and larger on our harddrives until it is complete. That is all well and good, if you start at the beginning and work your way to then end of the file.

A bit torrent is different. You are grabbing bits of the file from anywhere you can find them, in any order, and Az or similar is then rebuilding them on your computer. So what it does is creates a file the exact size as the final, then substitutes the fake bits for the real ones as it gets them. Really bloody clever. So you look at the file (if you find it) on your system, and it looks complete - it certainly is the full size, even after seconds. It isn't though - it is initially all fake.

If you go with the default setting, this fake file is temporarily stored in the Az installed directory. Only when it is fully the real file, does Az transfer it to the directory that you specified. If you have played with the settings for the temp directory, you may get to see the temp file. It looks like the real thing, but just doesn't work. That isn't a problem, you just have to wait for the download to finish rebuilding it.

While I'm at it, I might try to clarify something else (as best as I understand it).

Connection speeds. It is very rare for the realised download speed to match the theoretical max. Ie, if you pay for a 512 kbps connection, you are not likely to get more than about 380 - 420. Like buying a 300GB harddrive. You certainly don't get to store 300GB on it

Now - what is the story - you have paid for 512 (and are receiving 400), why in the world are you only getting about 40 max???? The units of measurement are different. Your connection speed is measured in kbps - kilo bits per second. Download rates are given in kilo bytes per second kB/s. Why? Probably just marketing. 512 sounds so much better than 64. (64? not 51? That is because there are 8 bits to a byte, not 10).

Hopefully, that is a bit clearer. Bugger huh.

Just to clear up my earlier statement then, without any jiggery-pokery or double talk. My current ISP provides nearly DOUBLE what my previous ISP did for the same plan (1500/512). That is measured by the same tool on a server which was the only PC running at the time so bandwidth wasn't affected. It doubled the day I switched over and it hasn't yet got even close to the poor speeds I was getting from T******. I never considered myself a T****** basher until I finally got some good service, which highlighted their service for what it had been, simply inferior in most respects (bandwidth, support and attitude). I strongly suggest that anyone using this provider do some bandwidth checks, if only to confirm you are getting what you pay good money for.

I've got the same problem mentioned above: I tried to subscribe to the video list thread and couldn't because it's closed. How do I get that thread onto my subscribed list?

Just downloaded part 2 of Neils video. It only took 17 minutes - this is starting to get fun. Left my machine on overnight and it uploaded over 1Gb. Looks like there are going to be a few copies out there.

That's exactly what we are trying to avoid. Limewire is no faster and far less secure. Most on these forums would object to installing it I think. This system is working just fine, it's taken a few different methods to get the process right but it seems to me that 95% of people are having no trouble at all. In fact, we've all probably learnt a bit.

Speed is dependant on your end regardless of the way we are doing it. (I have limewire, I know what it's like)

I'll leave the other thread unlocked if you prefer- that way people can subscribe to it, and Gumby & Groggy will be able to let everyone know when their respective parts of this process are ready.

But in doing so, other than Gumby, Groggy and myself, PLEASE don't post in it- I don't need the extra work getting rid of posts that are not meant to be there.

A bit more on Azureus. When the download starts if you double click on the torrent file being downloaded a new window will pop up. This is for all the stats connected to that torrent, There are five tabs, the most interesting being swarm. This gives a graphic on what is happening. You are always in the centre and watch it for a while to see how things work. The file tab will give you the total of the file(s) being downloaded, peers will tell you the details of your peers within the swarm. You can return to the download window by clicking on "my torrents" on the far left of the five tabs. It is a bit hidden and not so obvious.
Torrents are dependant on a couple of things, popularity and age. If they are popular and have a large number of peers/seeds the speeds can be huge. If they are old and interest has been lost due to the lack of seeds it will always be a problem to download them. If any of our torrents get to this stage then a request to re-seed them will have to be made. This shouldn't be to difficult I would not think.
The initial introduction to torrents is just about alwys disappointing due to speed issues. There are forums devoted to this stuff and most the questions are speed related. I suggest if you want to address a speed issue a search of "slow torrent" on google will get a large number of hits and a lot of conflicting advice. It took me a long time to come to grips with torrents and the initial reaction is to limit upload speeds to in an effort to increase D/L speeds. This is modt probably self defeating as the more you upload the more download speed will result. I have never done it on a dial up account so don't if that piece of advise is good or not, certainly on broardband limiting upload is not always a good idea.
We could basically set up a private torrent network I guess, I bet they exist, have just never thought about it. There is no central server needed beyond the initial seed so I suppose this is what has happened for all intents and purposes.

Now that there are lots of videos flying around the electronosphere out there, I hope those of you who enjoyed the shop tour and hinge video will fire a greeny DPB's way. I'm sure he'd appreciate the feedback.

Same for others who will hopefully take the time to contribute but not to me though, I've got enough (I can't believe I just said that a lifetime of trawlling for greenies has just gone up in smoke )

It would be nice to know if these sorts of things are worth proceeding with. I'm sure they are.
