Default I want to swap, but how do you get to swap samples when you are just starting out?

    Hi All,

Not sure if this is the correct forum or not, moderators please move it if required.

I have just started an 'academic' timber collection, joined the International Wood Collectors Society and had a look at the small collection of off-cuts etc. that I have that could be cut to the 'standard size' of 6" x 3" x 1/2". I will have about 15 samples to start my collection, plus a few for swaps.

Then I got to thinking, how do I get swaps, do I buy some good timber locally, or at a Wood Show and cut it up, or do I buy stuff on eBay? or advertise here?

Then it comes down to what do people want in exchange, as a new collector I don't have anything very rare or exotic. It is a conundrum! I think I will go and have lunch with my children and think it through later

    Have a good Fathers Day!

    Regards

    Brendan

Hi Brendan, if you see/hear that the forumites have samples you might like if you sent them a 3kg pre paid post bag they would probably donate offcuts or small pieces at reasonable prices. You need to put a list of what you do have on the forum and then we can offer what we may have stashed away in the offcut bin/box/shelf/woodheap. Good luck hope you enjoy luch.

    Hi Claw Hammer,

Thanks for that, I had a great lunch, my three children chipped in and took me to my favourite restaurant. Makes you realise how fast they grow up when they arrange things without needing to ask what to do

Anyway I have put together a list of what samples I have, anything not on the list I am interested in getting an off-cut or small piece that I can cut down to 6" x 3" x 1/2".

More than happy to pay something for the stuff and will provide post bags on request.

?; Kokoti (African Golden Sandal); Atherosperma moschatum, Sassafras; Cardwellia sublimis, Qld silky oak; Cedrela toona toonaaustralis, Australian cedar; Cinnamomum camphorum, Camphor laurel; Cryptocarya obovata, White Walnut; Dacrydium franklinii, Huon pine; Eucaluptus marginata, Jarrah; Flindersia brayleyana, Qld Maple; Fugus cunninghamii, Red Myrlte; Glochidion ferdinnandi, Fern Top; Gmelina salomonensi, White Beech; Grevillea robusta, Southern Silky Oak; Nothofagus cunninghamii, Myrtle; Pinus radiata, Radiata Pine; thats all I have at present.

    Regards

    Brendan

    Brendan,
I can also help you with a few offcuts and I will send you a PM.
I also suggest that you start an Excel file to manage your list, which you will then be able to send to your "contributors". Also it will make it much easier to maintain all the information you will need if you want an "academic" collection. eg density, common names, Harvesting&Marketing Code, Standrd Trade Name etc.

    Best Wishes...John Elliott.

    G'day.
As a hardwood Flooring Manufacturer, I have Schit loads of offcuts of Eastern Australian Hardwoods.

brush box, Turpentine, Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Grey Ironbark, Grey Box, Tallowood, White Mahogany, New England Blackbutt, Yellow Stringybark, White Stringybark, Rose Gum, Blue Gum, Red Ironbark, Red Mahogany, Red Gum, Grey Gum, and a few others that I can't remember at this time.
All samples would be profiled 80x19 T&G and 285mm long. All this material is kiln dried.
If these are of interest, let me know and I'll see what I can collect.
    Hooroo.
