Thanks Mobyturns. Porta does not sell stick lengths per web site and phone chat. Bunnings (A.C.T. at least) sell Porta dowel but not 10mm sticks.
My practice of cutting my own lengths from a stick length will need re-evaluation.
I have an Ozzie dowel jig which can aid production of in-line multiple dowel joints which effectively make a tenon.
Anyway, Woodwork is meant to be relaxing and rewarding - perhaps Murphy's law (Sod's law) is trying to prevail here.

as near as makes no difference, 9.5mm equals 3/8 inch.
Perhaps some "clever" stock person thinks 3/8" actually is equivalent to 10mm -- I know in common usage 10mm and 3/8 are interchangeable.
or perhaps, the Australian domestic manufacturing market has shrunk so much that we (home wood workers) will have to abandon metric and revert to the US version of imperial.regards from Alberta, Canada
