Year 12 HSC Folio Help.
Hey guys,
I'm currently making a sideboard for my year 12 major in IT Wood to be completed 3/4 of the way through next year.
As a requirement of the course, Part of my folio on the job must be handed in including the following: Documentation of Statement of Intent and Action/Time/Finance Plan, Design Research, Ideas, Concepts and Preliminary Sketches.
If ANYBODY has websites, already existing folios or anything that you can assist me with please post. Thanks alot.

Hi Sturty, and welcome.
My daughter is doing similar preparations for her final major artwork so I have some idea what you're going through.
Google Sketchup might be handy for your preliminary sketches, just google it, its a free download.
I've just discovered it & its great fun.......be warned though, it's very addictive.
Anyway, just my 2 bob's worth. Good luck with it all and let us know how you're going with it.The time we enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

Statement of intent is stating what you intend to build and why...you basically need to have a 'need' for the project and justify why you are making it.
eg. I am making a sideboard because.........it fulfills my need as it..........
Action and time plan is breaking the portfolio and construction process into a table. I did mine in excel spreadsheet. I listed all of the steps in constructing my project (down the spreadsheet), and then the weeks across the top of the spreadsheet. when I completed I step I would mark it off on the spreadsheet, it basically shows how long it takes for each step, and ensures you understand about time management.
Note: for mine I also showed how long I expected each step to take, and how long it actually took.
Finance plan, use excel again. Make and estimations column, and list all the components (i.e. timber, hinges, glue, sandpaper, etc.) and then make a rough estimate of each component. In another column, list what the actual component cost was, and then another column stating when you purchased it.
Note: it is also a good idea to keep receipts.
Research, it will take a while, I spent my summer holidays doing my research, and I could have/should have done more, I got around 50 pages research. Things to research, suitable timber, glues, hardware (hinges, handles), similar products, etc. Also have a look at magazines for ideas.
Keep a bibliography.
Ideas, exactly that, what ever ideas you have, draw sketches, make notes about each idea, if you change something write it down, why you changed it, etc.
Concepts and Preliminary Sketches, I used Google sketchup…very easy to use, and very good IMO. I took some of my rough drawings and converted them to renderings on the program. It looks more professional, and shows you can use the program. Do the concepts in order of the design ‘evolving’, from what you first started out with, to what you ended up with and why.
I did my major work this year. It is very fun, but can e stressful towards the end. Plan it out, visit timber yards, talk to the owners, right down notes about what they say. Get quotes. Have your timber organized for when you get back from the summer holidays.
I can help you if you have any other questions, send me a PM if you want or in this thread, whatever…just don’t ask for a copy of my portfolio
Goodluck,
Rhys

Hi Sturty,
I'm up to the proverbial in alligators at the moment.
Sorry for two quick links here - ask if any questions - I should be clear mid-week.

I wrote my portfolio in first person, just to show the problems I had, and I felt it explained it better, rather then saying:
Cut the timber to length (1200mm), dress it to thickness (50mm), you may have problems with tearout...
I wrote:
I first cut the timber to length (1200mm), and proceeded to dress it to 50mm on the Thicknesser, taking small cuts to minimise tearout.
Just sounds a bit better IMO
Be sure to not write your name on anything...just use your student number...as I found out the morning before it was dueBuy the best tools you can afford and you'll only cry once...

ask your school or recent school leavers to browse through some portfolio's. at my school, some students dont want their folio so they donate them and some are even asked to donate them (because of the quality).
btw, I am in year 12 and doing Multimedia...not the same project but pretty close to the same portfolio.
statement of intent is just that. state what your intentions are and why.
research - collect brochures, screen dumps of websites, write letters etc. do all this for similar things to what you want to make (product research) and also of the tools you will need to use and joints you will use etc (eg. mitre joint - use scms, titebond III glue, F clamp etc). then at the end write a revised statement of intent changing it according to your research.
Action/time plan - pretty much speaks for it self. in Multimedia, i have two timeplans - the first one is the original one i did in term 4 which shows when i want things done by and what i should be doing at any given week, the other one is the time i actually spent doing it. i will then follow up and compare the two which will help with my evaluation as well.
finance plan - make sure you include everything you buy for the project (including the pizza you ordered for lunch when you had to come in on the weekend cos you didnt get enough done in the week )
btw, i'm writing mine in first person
