Another question on this - in terms of 3mm vs 5mm orbits. I know this has been discussed extensively on the internet and the general consensus seems to be to get the 5mm if you are only going to get one of them and go to a higher grit or to get the 3mm if you have something like the rotex.
I already have a belt sander and will do any bulk sanding with that to 120grit. Therefore with the ROS will be used mostly from 120-240 (or 320 - but ideally 240 as the finishes use such as osmo say not to above that). In such a situation would you still just go the 5mm? Will a 5mm orbit with 240 be smooth? Or will a 3mm be better, and on the occasions where I need to do a bit more removal with the ROS just use a courser grit like 80
I dont intend to use the ROS between coats of finishes at all, since I've been told with osmo etc to hand sand at 600 or more and it doesnt take very long.

5mm is perfectly smooth at 240 and it gives you the option for coarser work as well

Agree with Elan. 5mm will give a very good result at 240 grit.

I have the ets ec/150 and get hard just thinking about it. It is an absolute pleasure!

Does anyone have any experience or comment on the Mirka Deros’ longevity, warranty claims and repairs? I was almost sold on it (Axminster UK have a great deal on sander/hose and Abranet discs at the mo, and post to Aus is pretty cheap - all comes in less than a Festool ETS EC 150 alone), but have been put off by a few comments I’ve found in reviews - very poor after sales/repair service; and a limited lifespan. One amazon reviewer commented that 7 of his (clearly a commercial op) started playing up at the same time (suggests a design flaw), and there’s another on FOG that has been through 5.
It’s pretty difficult working out the scale of these sorts of issues from the interweb as people with exceptionally bad or good experiences are more likely to post.
I’m tending back towards a festool purely based on the fact that if things go wrong, I’m reasonably confident that Festool will sort it out.
(I’ll be using it for DIY/home hobby use, so it won’t be hugely stressed)

Can't say for the DEROS, but my CEROS has held up for 8ish years in a production environment, including many drops to a concrete slab; the thick rubber cover makes it much bouncier than the Festool
Only issue I had was one of the wires in the cord broke after about 3 years. They replaced it and the control board under warranty with no hassle, didn't even ask for proof of purchase.

Neither. I sent it to a repair shop (had to find one that would do Mirka) expecting to pay and they just did it.

I too was worried about the reliability of the Deros and the potential lack of warranty support if purchased online/overseas and had read all of the forum posts you mention.
I ended up getting a Deros pack through Tradecounteronline in the UK. Paid about $840- landed with 200 abranet Ace disks, systainer, hose etc.
Before buying I enquired with them about warranty and my concerns regarding reliability. They said they had sold a heap of the Deros sanders over the last few years and have not had any returns and that over half of their orders were overseas with no reports of reliability issues or warranty issues. They also registered the product on the Mirka warranty site/app with my details so I assume I am covered under the 3 year warranty etc.
As for the sander - it seems ok. Sands well, dust extraction, noise levels and vibration are all fine. I'm not a fan of the paddle switch needing to be depressed to keep the sander on - I would prefer am on/off switch. The sander also feels a bit unbalanced with a dust hose attached (assuming an overhead boom arm would help here).
I note the Festool ets ec 150 is on sale at the moment for about $750- at Carbatec.
I'm sure the Festool, Mirka and even the Metabo will all be much of a muchness / similar in overall quality and performance etc.
Cheers, Dom

Thanks Dom. that's reassuring.
The carbatec deal is pretty tempting in comparison now. I wasn't too keen on the $900 price in comparison to the deros deals, but an extra $150 off might just sway me to Festool

I bought a second hand Ceros. Its a cracker! Ive also a Festool ETS150/3 and RO125/5 (its a chainsaw!!!).
I feel the Ceros is better at a few things... it is very quick, plus I like the balance better.
On support, I emailed the support guy (he's also the distro) here in Oz a few times with some questions and he came right back, very quick and an approachable/ameniable chap. I enquired about additional products, parts, repairs, etc and he had solid answers on all of them. It is a professional tool, targeted at professionals (such as refinishing shops) and as such they don't dick around.
As an aside, I'll be using it this arvo to finish sand (3000, 5000), then compound and polish the HSV Its a nice, light and crisp tool for the job.
