$19 Spindle sander
Hi there,
On my last instrument build I could have used a spindle sander. I did have a couple of drums that mount on the drill press but dust extraction has to be cobbled together and I am aware of putting side forces on the machines bearings. Well after a search and finding a cheap spindle sander was about $350 and a better one about $1200 I took another look as to what could be done on the drill press.
I was intending buying some bearings to hold the foot of the drum. I looked at some Youtube as to dust extraction too. As none of the store bought drums ran true I had to make some. So while truing up a drum on the lathe I had the light bulb moment. The lathe live center could act as the bottom bearing. So it cost me $19 for a morse taper reamer (that I needed anyhow) to make the mounting hole. Everything else is recycled.
Works a treat.
Regards
John

Nice idea, but do you use the press handle to lift up and down to get the oscillation? just kidding. that's great.
