40 years ago today
What happened 40 years ago today? We changed from Pounds Shillings and Pence to Decimal Currency.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
It was my first year of work as an apprentice Carpenter and Joiner (5 year term) and my weekly wage was £5 10 shillings. This jumped to $11.<o></o>
£3 was to Mum for board and with the rest I had to get/start my hand tools of trade as well as getting to and from work, clothing etc.<o></o>

No worries, I had thought the same till recently someone pointed out it happened later. But they didnt remember when or why.

Forty years ago I was working in a bank raking in the pounds, shillings and pence for returning to the Reserve bank and shovelling out the dollars and cents.
On that day I had about 5 arguments with customers who didn't want the new currency but wanted to be given the old pounds, which we weren't allowed to do.
The good thing about it was that the banks closed early the previous wednesday and did not reopen until monday, which allowed us to do the changeover of all our records ( remember this was all before computers, all records had to be altered and balanced manually ). We were finished by thursday night and had a day of on the friday.
Peter.
