    Thumbs up A $50 haul

I visited Hardwoods Australia in Mona Vale today in search of a nice hardwood board that I could use to make a box and therefore practice hand cutting dovetails. I was poking around in the racks for a while before I got talking to one of the guys that works there. He told me they had a bundle of timber odds and ends that they wanted to get rid of and I could have it all for $50 cash. The bloke took me down to the back of the warehouse and showed me the bundle. Jackpot. It was a decent sized collection of DAR ranging in length from about 1 metre to 2.5 metres; of various cross sections, from 25mm x 50mm lengths to a few large pieces of about 300mm x 50mm; and included a range of timber species. There was Flooded Gum, Black Butt, Sydney Blue Gum, Tallow Wood and other stuff I couldn't identify. It was all in pretty good nick, mostly select grade, some standard grade and some with a few gum veins. "Yep, I'll have it," I said.

While the bloke from Hardwoods Australia dug the pack out with a forklift I headed home to get my 4WD. I'd initially taken my wife's car and there was no way my haul was going to fit in the boot of a Commodore.

All in all a rather successful day I reckon. The timber is now sitting in my garage still in the back of my 4WD. My next challenge is finding some space to store it.
    Regards,
    Ian.
