6 Month Furniture Design Course Coffs Harbour TAFE
Hey everyone,
Just thought I would throw up the link for the new course we are running at Coffs Harbour TAFE. It's a 6 month government supported Cert III in Design Fundamentals (Furniture) starting semester 2 this year (18th July). It is very design focused with a large chunk of theory work, all based on furniture design. But you will still learn heaps of practical skills. The idea is that it links into a 6 month Cert IV that will run the first half of next year.
You will get to do a CAD unit where you learn to use Fusion 360, and fingers crossed we are supposed to be getting a full sheet CNC by June which we will be able to play with and incorporate into designs.
If anyone has any questions feel free to private message me your phone number and we can chat.

Thanks,

Just do it!
I did the 2 years course at Canberra School of Art when I was 36.
Id Done an apprenticeship (Patternmaking) but after being exposed to crafts and industrial design thru working at UNSW and USyd and Leyland Oz decided to do a structured course rather than stumble into furniture making.
If this is a new course maybe give them a year to sort out the bugs and get the equipment and staff up to speed.
Canberra imported a Pom to head up the course and that was a disaster.
Only 2 survivors from the first intake.
No aussies in the next intake fixed that.

Yeah would love to just do it. Busy with kids as a single parent just self taught and plenty of books and hands on time for now.
Definitely good to know it’s close to home and available. It’s just the weekly time needed in class. Would be great to invest in some formal training for myself in that area even if it doesn’t become my primary employment.

I also think there is so much value in a structured learning environment and format.
Of course we can learn so much now online and via books at home, but getting in person instruction is so rewarding.
Also just learning how to solve the inevitable problems that arise when making something, and having people around you to ask questions and discuss it with.
Though the course won't give you all the skills, it will provide a very solid foundation on which to build!

Very much agree, im learning skills with my collection of tools and wood but i work in IT so never had formal training in this area. Something i desire absolutely just life circumstances i havent been able to prioritize it as i cant make the commitment to the practical workshop time on campus. So my workshops here at home with me for now
Are you a teacher for this course?
Cheers,
Nathan
