6ft Aquarium Cabinet - Upholsterers don't make good chippies
Hi all, not sure if I've picked the right forum to throw this under (and pretty sure after reading the rules that I'm not breaking any)
I've tried my hand at building a small cabinet before, but it turns out that I fail - I think I'll stick to my sewing machine and staple gun.
I've done a bunch of reading up on bench saws, routers and all the rest of the gadgets that'd be needed - and my plunge router and circular saw just wouldn't be up to the challenge.
I'm looking for someone to build up something simiar to the pic attached - but can't seem to find any recommendations of companies or people on the Gold Coast who would do such a thing.
It'd house a 6ft tank (420 wide, 460 high), with the bottom cabinet around ~700 high and 2-4 doors along the front, and the top ~300 with one big upwards lifting hatch/door. The bit on the side is hollowed out, to allow pipes/cables to be run out of sight to the top of the tank.
So if anyone here could point me in the right direction, or if they know of someone who would be interested in some pro-rata work, it'd be hugely appreciated
Thanks!
Russ

I think that you can build something like that useing hand tools.
You do have to consider how much weight this is going to carry as that will determine the way it is built. As you said you are a chippie and I gather that you know what I am talking about.
One thing that I find most interesting is to actually look inside cabinets that have already been constructed. Are you able to do the same. One point to note look inside more then one.

Nah, I really couldn't build it to the level that I'm after. I could build a simple box with doors whacked on the front without much drama, but I'm after a nice quality piece of furniture, not just an aquarium stand.
From what I've read up, to do nice doors with raised inserts I'd need a half decent bench router - the best I've got is an elcheapo plunge router that never stays at the same height
The frame itself would only have to be 2x4, with bracing across every ~400 - plenty of plans on the net that could be modified to suit. It's just the overall finishing that I know I'd cock up ;D
I'm not a chippie by the way, I'm a marine trimmer - must have misworded it

I guess I only read the staple gun and missed the sewing machine. I am sure someone will respond to your post soon.

Rustys, I know just how you feel, I am in the process of attempting to tame industrial sewing machines, any competent cabinet maker could build that, if no one on the forum puts their hand up hit the yellow pages, go and check out their work be you commit, be able to use those &%$#@ sewing machines you may be able to set up a contra deal

SEnd me the size of the tank you want to use and the type of material you also want for the doors and I will put together a quote for you. Where is it to go(lounge room, restaurant)?
