Need aadvice on sudden availability of trees
Hello fellow woodies,
I need some advice. I live across the road from a planned car park development. The council has posted a plan of what will be happening. This includes identification of a number of trees that are going to be removed. I think at least one of them is an oak with a ~75 cm diameter trunk and some eucalyptus of a similar diameter..
Is there anyone out there with some advice on how I could acquire some of this wood when it is being disposed of? Is there anyone who could help dispose of it as there is a lot more than I could take in myself? Is there anyone with experience or advise on dealing with council and the contractors that they will hire for the job?
The council is Whitehorse in Victoria. The site with trees being cleared is between Delany Avenue, Barry Road, Station Street in Burwood East of Melbourne. There are 6 - 9 trees with usable amounts of timber on them.
The name of the plan is:
3 Delany avenue & 8 - 10 Barry Road, Burwood Bennetswood Shopping Centre Carpark Upgrade Carpark Concept Plan
Any advise will be welcome
Oh one more thing, There is a weatherboard house across the street that is also going to be torn down with all sorts of wood becoming available. Need to know how to do the right thing and recycle it. As before any advice welcome.Last edited by claytonjohnroby; 21st July 2011 at 01:19 AM. Reason: Forgot about the house that is coming down

Speak to the council, or better, one of the councillors, otherwise the trees will be cut into useless 30cm lengths. I don't know about down there, but up here there is a bloke who is set up for rescuing trees like this, and is prepared for the lumps of metal that may be hidden inside.
As for the house, speak to the owner/demolition contractor.

Write to the council and follow up with lots of calls and / or letters. If you see the contractors removing the trees approach them directly. They may or may not have the gear to move heavy lengths. They probably will not be able to remove sections off site but may be able and happy to accomadate you. If they are co-oprative reward them some way and everybody will be happy. It would be good to see the trees being used for something other than burning.
