Absolute Novice Building a Desk
Hi there,
I'm a complete novice at woodworking but handy enough around the house but looking for any quick and friendly advise I can find. I am building the most simple of simple corner desks. It's going to be 1.8m long (LHS), 1.2m long (RHS), 50cm deep and 70cm high. I am trying to find the best (and easiest) type of timber to use. I am hoping to have it custom cut into the exact size I need at the supplier. ie Bunnings.
Two extras to keep in mind;
i) I want to stain it with a dark oil so it matches existing furniture
ii) Is it easy enough to sand the front desktop edges so it's not a harsh, sharp edge (I don't want to splurge on a router).
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Frank

Buy your ply and some veneer edge tape. This way you can stain it to match your other pieces, make sure you match the edge tape to the ply.
This may not be everyones favourite idea, but it will be easy to assemble, you could screw and glue or just glue.

I find stores like Bunnings and Mitre10 only have drop saws to do cuts for you so they can only cut 200 or 300mm wide rather than having the capacity to cut 500mm wide timber, but maybe the Bunnings stores in Australia are different? I'd recommend buying a circular saw if you're getting into woodworking because they are quite cheap and make cutting through 500cm or 600mm wide timber really easy.
In regards to timber, I find chain stores like Bunnings charge double what I pay at timber merchants. I wanted to build some built-in bookcases made from radiata pine 200mm wide and found it was half the price at the timber specialist place. Have you googled timber suppliers in your area?
