    Default New addition

    Went to garage sale today and found this. Only paid $30 dollars for it. It's not much good for anything but collecting. It still has the manual as seen in the pics and a brochure with the price in Pounds shillings and pence.

    I've never seen one before, Has anyone else?

    I have an old Sher drill which seems to be idenentical to what is driving your little saw bench .... great little drill.

    Haven't seen one before, but what does the lever do. As you say interesting for the collectors.

    Seen many years ago. I believe that the saw bench is a removable accessory, and that the drill and frame can be mounted vertically to form a drill press.

    Little Drill/... My old man has a couple of those drills, they are huge and heavy, but will drill a hole to china

    The drill is a "ball tearer" Those thing go of ever, though the combination of the weight and the torque from the motor tend to try and break your wrist when it catchs (Ive had catch;s with a modern drill and they are nothing compared to those things)

    Looks like you have an almost complete set of accessories... good score, somewhere I have the jointer and you can find the circular saw accesory (Scary) at pretty much every swap meeting/flea market, but never seen the saw table

    You saw you paid $30 for it, the drill has to be worth that, the rest you got for free..

    Looks interesting. Does the motor still go? It still looks to be in reasonable condition. Bit of a clean, some oil and read the instructions. Looking forwards to progress on this one.

    Ah the mighty Shopmate! Still remember my dad bringing his home in 1963 and the two of us unpacking it with great excitment. It came with attachments for an orbital sander,jigsaw, the table saw converts to a sanding table, a woodlathe and a drill press. We used the daylights out of it, built an extension to the house, several boats, and I reckon that a large part of my current loss of hearing is due to the hours we spent with the drill runnning.

    A few years ago the old man took the drill off to the repair shop and had everything rebuilt. You can actually do that with one of these. I used it as a sanding table for my last boat project, and now that I've had the big buy-up at Carba-Tec, it's over in my brother's shed doing duty as a light drill press while he restores his BMW.

    For what it was at the time, there wasn't a better home handy man's tool. For what you can get now at any number of tool shops, it's a museum piece. Every stationary machine I own now has an induction motor, a preference the Shopmate helped me establish a long time ago.

    I wouldn't swap it for the TSC 10HB.

    Got the remnants of one at home, belonged to the FIL, very versatile little unit, lathe, sander, drill press, table saw with rise & fall table drill was 2 speed and had grunt. I have pirated various bits & pieces from it to make up all sorts of gear.

    I saw one of these at the North Rocks markets a few months ago or maybe last year. I recall it had some marking on it which suggested it had been the property of some educational instiution.

    I recall it because I'd just inherited an old ShopSmith from my father and it seemed to be a similar sort of device on a smaller, lighter scale.

    Still getting around to restoring the ShopSmith (for sentimental rather than entirely practical reasons of course).

    Default The Sher Shopmate

    I've picked up a couple of these over the years. They are great for the little jobs. I principally use mine as a lathe for small turning pieces. Until I got a 'fair dinkum' chisel mortiser, I've also used the Shopmate with a chisel mortising bit in it. As an innovation from the past - its got nostalgia and utility value.

    You could get the motor rewound if it's cactus.
    Whether it's worth it or not is another matter.

    For $30 its worth it alone for the bits you could scavenge for other things as Elbow said!

    That is true .... I got one from my father when we cleaned out his shed .... although they are a big drill they are comfortable to use. I have recently started to fit mine with small sanding pads to do the inside of carved bowls ..... works a treat. The weight puts good force on the piece and the power means that it doesn't get bogged down.

    The drill does go, but alas, it has gone to a better home.... Gave it to my brother, he's going to try to use it as a mortiser.
