Introduction
Hello. I just wanted to introduce myself as a new member of your forum. I'm a Canadian woodworker and have been involved in the hobby for quite some time. I hope to learn some new techniques and perhaps, if none of you mind, exchange some ideas from this side of the ocean. I live on Vancouver Island off Canada's west coast. So, G'day, eh.

Welcome to the Board! Feel free to jump in whenever you want. Caution though, as ask an Australian a stupid question & you'll definitly get a stupid answer But then thats part of the fun of this WW board! But seriously, if we can help, we will & if you can help - excellent!

Thanks Shane. I appreciate that. I spend a lot of time on this site: http://www.canadianwoodworking.com/. Some of you might find that interesting as well. I trust that the moderators of this Bulletin Board won't mind my saying so since it will benefit all of us. I noticed that there's been a general discussion of a lot of woods that unfamiliar to my North American ears. That alone is going to be an experience. Hey, stupid questions get the same kind of answer over here too. Believe me, I've been party to both sides of that fence. Thanks for the welcome. It's going to be fun.

Theres a lot of local timber that is unfamiliar to this lot here as well
Don't worry about the moderators, most of them are half asleep anyway (wake up , Neil, Shane) but they have been known to edit the odd post.
And watch your language as some words here have a different meaning eg
Darn, what one does to holey socks
Dang, unknown in strine
Root, most unnacceptable and is a local term for procreation (wow, that was big for a Saturday morning) unless referring to the subterrainean structure of a tree.

What?!!! It's Saturday!!! Already? LOL, well it's Friday night here and it's only 5:50 p.m. with the night just beginning. Maybe I'll walk over to the pub for some Fosters.
Hmm. I see we're going to have problem with the language. Oh well, I think we all know the big words we can't use) Using the few you mentioned is sort of like wearing short pants. I would guess it's the "long" pant (trouser) words we have to stay away from.
If you want to visit my site I've been putting a lot of things on there for fellow woodworkers. Various links come to mind as well as some pictures of a few of my favourite things. I don't suppose I'll be able to talk to any of you tomorrow, tomorrow being Sunday over there. I've heard that the Aussie's have to go to church. It's the law) ) LOLBob/Rob Aplin

Now, if I could just get a job that took me between Canada and Aus I could have a long weekend every week, finish the week here on Friday and start over there on Monday.
Now for some more local rules, Fosters, ughhhh, terrible stuff and only for export, we keep the good stuff at home. Then there is the geography, I am in Melbourne which is the finest State in Australia and the moderator Shane lives in Mackay which is a northern suburb of Melbourne .
Apart from that brief intro I shall now go and finish off a wall unit I am building with Tasmanian Oak. Another anomaly, it's not oak but a Eucalypt but thats what we call it and if is looking in he will throw in the botanical name.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

Welcome to the BB Rob (Bob has been terminated).
Firstly - About that church thing. WRONG
Secndly - About the administrators Neil (thats me) also known as U and sometimes as Poobah and a heap of other pretty unsavory names from time to time. I am the Big Chief. I'm suave, handsome, debonheir, friendly, fun loving, sophisticated, brilliantly talanted. Did I mention handsome? Yes, oh yeah, a great speller and extremely modest.
My other administrator and right hand man is all the above with one exception He is also the head censor and will cut a post in a trice if it offends his censorbilities. Also known from time to time as "That Bastard", "Old Fart" and other long pants names.
Forum Moderator: Shane again all the above but in a much younger version. He sometimes has a habbit of doing this strange Mwaaaahahahaha laught thing which leads us to believe that there is an underlying sadistic streak to his nature, but then again he lives in Queensland so what else can you expect.
In general we are 3 genuine Mr Nice-guys, (with a twist).
Lastly that brings me to Iain. What can I say? He's a shrink...... say no more. That means you should take anything he says with a grain of salt. (However he is partly right about the Fosters.)
Mackay is on the central coast of Queensland (heading up to the pointy bit at the top) whilst Melbourne (arguabely the greatest city in the known world) is the capitol of Victoria the greatest State in Australia.
I hope this sets you straight on a few minor things. I am sure that others will have more to say on the subject.
By the way the only trueism in the name of the timber Tasmanian Oak is that some of it comes from Tasmania. It comes from 3 species of tree: Eucalyptus delegatensis, Eucalyptus obliqua, and Eucalyptus regnas.
It is also known by the following common names: Alpine Ash, Australian Oak, Blue Leaf, Brown-top, Brown-top Stringybark, Gum-topped Stringybark, Messmate, Messmate Stringybark, Mountain Ash, Mountain White Gum, Stringybark, Narrow-leaved Stringybark, White-top, White-top Stringybark, Stringy Gum, Swamp Gum, Victorian Ash, White Mountain Ash and Woolybutt.
Work that one out.
Personally, I really like the last name and think it should all be called that. Can you imagine this. "Can I help you madame?" "Yes. What timber is that table made with?" "Woolybutt" "EXCUSE ME?!!!" "Woolybutt." "Listen young man there's no need to get personal. Just because I have a little hormonal hair doesn't mean........." This is about the spot that Shane wood put in a (Mwaaahahahah)
Sorry - got a bit carried away there.
The above info is from a pretty rare book called Checklist of Australian Trees by the late Peter J Robson.
Cheers - Neil

Doorstop - You are a dickhead.
This is not a personal attack on the king of the personal attacks, just a simple observation. You can't grow hair on the end of a penis or Doorstop's head.

I'm overwhelmed with all the camaradarie (is that Russian?)that you all seem to be enjoying Cool. Gee, it's too bad all of you are probably at work right now. It's still Sunday here... O.K., I know; you'll be at Friday before I am.
I have to admit; I'll be checking my atlas out so I can determine where you are all located. So, the "oak" Tasmanian style that you're talking about is not really an oak at all then? Does it look like oak? Do you have an actual oak in there?
Hey Doorstop, the "Furriner" depends on where you're standing
Iain is a shrink? Like psychologist or did he waste a good medical degree on being a psychiatrist? Be talking to you soon! Talk to you Tuesday...Bob/Rob Aplin

Yes, I analyse all my wood before I start, I hate to use a timber that pines or gums up.
In my case the former applies and I did not attend med school, psycho not psychi, big difference, probably about $500,000.00 a year. Not my way. Attended two Uni's who taught me a lot like, poker, euchre, blackjack. POst Grad, card counting, how to cheat, sleight of hand etc.
As for this lot, beyond my scope, I would not try Shellawax, it is absolutely dreadful, tastes like crap and is hallucinogenic. Gives a nice finish on wood though but does anyone care.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

My missus has the little horses,(shetlands) Iain has the big ones so he can fall off and break his bones properly.
Just for the record.
Welcome Rob.

G`day Rob
Welcome to the mad house, please don`t think off the above as a good example of us Aussies, there all from the EAST side of Kalgoorlie and as a consequence are as mad as hatters. As for that cats p*** Fosters forget it, for a real beer it has to be from the SWAN label anything else is a insult to your taste buds(did i mention that the others are from the EAST of gods country? Probably why they haven`t got any taste.)

Sorry mate, but the best beers in Oz and possibly the world (except for guinness, which has eutopian qualities and its not fair to compare) is Coopers. Pale, dark, sparkling or vintage. Naturally brewed. All the others taste like some chemical concoction once you know the real stuff.
Do yourself a favour.
Cheers

Now I wasn't going to enter this 'war of the best beer' But I gotta say without a doubt that ALL beer taste like it comes from the swamp where the water from the ceramic phone ( dunny ) gets sent. There is only one drink for us Aussie men & that is of course the famous Bundaberg Rum.....
