Default Advice on glass doors for wall unit

    Folks,
The "Big Project" progresses, albeit slowly, and I've reached the point of a trial fit of the top to the bottom as in the attached shot. My plan is to fit 4 glass panelled doors to the top section. The post and rails for the doors will be constructed using the CMT panel set, as were the bottom doors, and the glass panel is intended to have a bevel of around the 2.5cm inside the frame.
Based on the fact that the glass dimemsions are 1040mm x 350mm x 6mm and I am concerned about its weight (I don't have any figures, but if the coffee table top is any indication they'll be bloody heavy!!) I have the following questions questions:

    1. Do you think that the joints created by the post and rail construction will have adequate strength?
    2. The local shops reckon float glass is adequate but should I use the toughened variety?
    3. Will three 50mm non-mortice style hinges provide adequate support?
    4. How much play should I leave between the bottom of the rebate in the post and rails and the edge of the glass panel?- I was figuring on 1mm or less, just as long as the glass wasn't under pressure but didn't rattle about.

    Thanks in advance
    Ian

Thanks Redwood, but don't forget I want to put a 2.5 cm bevel on the glass. Wouldn't 3mm taper away to almost nothing at the edges?

Bevels usualy are from 3mm up To 20mm and from 0-45 deg. so it depends on the deg of bevel you want. the weight difference between 3 and 6mm glass is huge and if you went with 6mm you would need 3 hinges and mortice and tennon the bottom stile/rail

Hi Ian, Here are the weight figures for different thickness float glass.
    3mm - 7.5kg/sqm
    4mm - 10kg/sqm
    5mm - 12.5kg/sqm
    6mm - 15kg/sqm
Maybe that will give you so figures you can gauge from.

    Cheers
    Michael
