advice on marine ply for spa cover
Hi All,
I am after some advice please on marine ply (up-to 12mm thick) to make a spa cover. The spa is an octagonal shape and will be lifted via a pulley system and we'd like to keep it in one piece. We just want it to be a basic cover to keep debris out - nothing fancy.
I do know that there are various types of marine ply but not sure specifically which one we'd need to make this. The spa is mildly chlorinated not salt if that helps.
So ...
1. which marine grade ply do I use?
2. where can it be sourced from in Melbourne (we are on the mornington peninsula)
3. Is there anything else we need to do to the ply i.e. laquer it and if so in what?
i'm sure there will be other questions but this will get me started in the right area )
I really appreciate the advice here...
Thanks,
L

If you are not actually building a boat, normal construction ply is fine - the adhesive used is waterproof - marine ply just has tighter tolerances for voids in the layers (ie none).
Coat it in three or four coats of wet-on-wet marine epoxy to seal and protect the timber, and cover that with the paint of your choice (such as solarguard) to keep UV off the epoxy.
A lighter solution could be 10mm thick fluteboard which you should be able to get from a signwriter's place.

Thanks for the replies...
@ Master Splinter - we may consider covering the ply in marine grade vinyl instead of a 2 part epoxy system... which ever works out cheaper and less time intensive. I think the fluteboard may be a little too flimsy but thanks for the suggestion on that )
@ - thanks for the contact. I notice on their site they have a few other products - will give them a call to clarify..
Cheers,
L
