    Default advice on plywood cabinet

Hi Read the post on joining heavy table top so coming in with a similar problem, i have a job to build a cabinet for a restraunt, it will be 1800 H 900 W and 450 D, i am using 18mm ply as it will be sanded, primed, painted and the external sides will have merbau slats, horizontal, ripped down to8mm to give better appearance, the face edges will also be nosed with a timber edging and there will be overlay cabinet doors and a pair of drawers, side by side for cutlry, with metal sides and runners. i will rout in a back panel 8mm ply it will sit on a 90mmH box style hardwood base and lockable casters for limited mobility. I am making it in a lower and higher section as it will be too heavy to carry up the54 steps from my work shop(pole home) now down to my question, method of construction, i was going to rout the shelves into the sides, say7mm,glue and pocket hole screw them , or screw from outside into edge grain of ply, however i just got a book from the library,"Quick and Easy Custom Cabinets"Anthony Guidice his quick and easy method is, just biscuit join and then screw the shelves from the outside, biscuits spaced to allow for screws between, this would seem to be time saver however can this be a stong as a housed joint for a shelve 900 W?, given that the only heavy items will be on the base shelve which will sit on the base . sorry for the long winded post, but trying to give the best word picture , regards Rossco ,

I would go for the dado and screws from the outside if the appearance is not an issue. Failing that I would use pocket hole joinery so screws would not be seen from outside the cabinet.
    Reality is no background music.

Thanks John , on reflection Ill go with the dados as its a paying customer and do a biscuit only cabinet as a test run, shorter shelves, the dados arent that much extra work, do it once , etc, Rossco

    Default cabinet shelves

    Woodserfer

900 mm is a little long for a shelf that is not supported in the middle. People will tell you they are only going to put butterflies on it, but will actually stack elephants in there. Then they will complain that you didn't build it right.
If the outside of the cabinet is exposed, dado the shelf and glue it in. Put a couple of pocket screws in each side where they can't be seen.
Biscuits are only good for alignment/positioning. They don't offer enough structural support to be worth the effort.
    An ol cabinet maker.
    Regards
    Joe

    Rossco,
    your original post included
the external sides will have merbau slats
being so, placing the slats "just so" would hide any screws driven in from the outside -- quicker than pocket screws?
    regards from Alberta, Canada

Hi Ian, yes I can hide the screws under the merbau slats, the pocket screws from the inside should hold better being skewed though so i have both options, i will post a photo upon completion, thanks Rossco
