Default Advice to remove stain from timber table

HELP! Our brand new timber outdoor setting is wrecked. We had an ugly black stain on the table.

We put a plastic plant pot with loose tomatoes in it, on the table for a couple of days. When we removed the pot there was this black ring. (see photo attached).

Could I use vinegar, turps, metho or the like to draw the stain out? Or will any of these make it worse?

I'd like to try and avoid sanding it as I'm not sure how deep the stain will go and I don't like my chances of matching the colour when I re-oil it.

Some expert advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Hopeful Chris

    Hi,
It seems this must only have an oil finish? You may be able to use oxalic acid and do multiple applications. After doing the area thats stained, you should then cover the whole table to make it uniform in colour. If its only water, you could wait a while till it dries.Put it in the sun till its dry.If that fails you may have no choice but to sand it back.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try that. Where do you get oxalic acid from? I read that it's found in baking soda, which I just tried but that didn't work.

My daughter had a similar stain on her outdoor table late last year. Short of removing all with caustic soda, the table was sanded with an orbital sander using 60 grit up to 320 grir. Stain removed completely and table finished with Bondall "Monocel" satin stain and varnish.
