Advice needed - Short lengths into long table top
I am attempting to make a number of items from what was a jarrah picket fence.
The lengths are up to 1200 mm and about 65mm wide by 18 mm thick.
I intent to make a few shelves at 1450 mm long by 270 wide - and would like the pieces to run lengthways. So I want to end join two pieces to make up the required length and edge join as per normal to get the the required width.
It seems to me that it will be absolutely critical to get the widths identical (beyond the normal straight and square) if two or more pieces will make up the 1450 mm length.
Are there any "standard" ways of making and gluing this up?
The working idea I have at the moment is to start by gluing two widths of 1450 mm lengths (four single pieces) using scarf joints, then use a jointer on the edge (to clean up any width errors) before adding the next pair and repeating. Is this a good idea or not??

I'd say join the pieces end-to-end first, using something like a mitre lock router bit (self aligning, unlike a scarf join) and epoxy, and then simply dress the sides of these longer boards, or possibly run the same router bit along them without being too OCD about getting them all the same width.
When assembling into the tabletop, stagger the joins so that no two fall next to each other, and play around to get a pleasing grain and colour match.
