Mal
I use baking paper. It is made as a non-stick product, comes on a roll and is inexpensive, especially if you steal it from the kitchen when no one is looking. If the kitchen police are vigilant in your household it can be obtained from the supermarket.

Waaay better than cheap pipe-clamps!
I see you've anticipated one potential problem, the dowels on the side opposite the wedges could seriously mark softer woods like red cedar if you used a lot of pressure, but I see you've thoughtfully used a caul strip to protect the workpiece. I guess denting the edges a bit usually doesn't matter too much as one normally glues up panels oversize for later trimming, but occasionally it does matter.
Anyhow, you've got yourself a set of very handy panel clamps for a fraction of the cost of the commercial variety & you should get a lot of use out of them for the rest of your woodworking career. What's not to like about that!?
Cheers,IW

That has come up very well and so simple. I think I have the materials to replicate so I will be indulging in the sincerest form of flattery: Imitation.
Down the track I think I will adapt it to clamp laminated beams I plan to make up for a shed modification. A number (ten or twelve) of shorter versions of your design down a 7m length will work well I think
