Alder or Poplar substitute??
Hi,
I'm looking at making some wood climbing holds. Suggestions for wood from the North US have been Alder and Poplar - hardwood (?) that is soft enough to shape easily with a sander, yet when bolted will not crush like pine does.
I have tried cypress, and will be trying redgum - but both seem very hard - and I would like to find something locally with a little more softness.
Bolts are countersunk with a 25mm holesaw, and use a 3/8" washer and bolt.
An example of an Alder hold is here:

Cheers,
Andy

For guitar making I have heard that Silky Oak is a similar sounding timber to Alder. That would normally mean that it is similar in density. It isn't too bad to shape. Not sure about comressibility though - never really subjected it to load like you would get in climbing. You can buy Alder and Poplar in Aus too.
PeterThe other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Thanks for the quck replies. I will try sourcing some of this wood - does anyone know any good lumber yards in Castlemaine or Bendigo? Or should I just order through the hardware?
Thru the hardware the Redgum is $15 a meter (100x100)- does that sound expensive?
Thanks again,
Andy

Willow may work for that .
It stands up to the constant crushing of a cricket ball ok .
I recall hearing that it was used for truck decks at one time , so it can't be too bad for holding fast mechanically .

Robutacion just felled some poplar, (search the forum on these two words) he might be happy to mill some in the sizes you want.
