Just an update, Waldo and I started the assembly of the top. We also cut the trench for the tail vice.
"Unfortunately we ran out of west system resin and could not finish the assembly.
Hopefully next week.
That is for another day.
P.s. the glue run is on purpose filling in the gum vein and defects in the top as we go.

Simple
TS,
May I say what a great thread. Read the early posts but missed a lot of the generous offers and progress, fantastic everyone. Congrats on the the bench I'm sure it will last a life time and best of all every time you use it you will feel the glow of satisfaction we all get ie I made that and even better the memory of the help from woodworking mates.
I was bitten by the bug a few years ago, read the magazines dreamed of getting all the fancy machines and slowly bought them well some of them. I watched the videos and bought the books of all the highly skilled craftsman and wished I could do the same as they did. To the point I admit that it became difficult to start a project much less finish it for fear of failure and wasting money on expensive hardwood.
Well I have come to realise the pleasure is in the doing no matter how small or large and complicated and that has come about from following the threads in this forum. So thanks Neil and all the contributors.
Now as to why I am quoting Midge. I have a BS, TS, DT jig, SCMS, DE with cyclone etc. and I have to say one of my favourite tools at the moment is a cheap 16mm beveled edge chisel. Why because I have learnt how to sharpen it, no not quite scary sharp possibly just a little frightening but I can produce fine shavings from the end grain of softwood, yeah. The satisfaction I now get from using a cheap gift from my daughter is just great. Now if I could just use my smoother without leaving tram lines
Cheers Mike and keep at itLast edited by m2c1Iw; 20th July 2007 at 02:14 AM. Reason: spell check failure

One of the first tools I bought where some old chisels. A Chisel is one of the finest tool I have known. It however takes a huge level of skill and I have butchered allot of wood learning how to use them. I have come to appreciate the value of chisel. I feel the most pleased when I am working and carving with a chisel.
This is something that I still need help with. I have pot luck. Depending on the waning and waxing of the moon. I can sometimes get a fine polished edge sometimes I just cannot get anything.
Waldo suggested that I get some one on one tuition from a forum member. Otherwise I will have to take some paid tuition.
I am considering building a set of laminated 60º pitch Krenov style planes.

Related to the building of Thumbsuckers bench I am in need of a good two solid screws for the front vice. I have been considering my options on one hand I can buy the carabtec ones for $60 a pair or I can get premade (old) wooden screw. At the moment I have only found one, however.
The other idea is to make my own wooden screws using carabtec's Wood Thread Boxes for $70 however they max out at 1.5". Or is that the way wrong tool for what I need?
The way I look at it I spend $60 on two metal vices or $70 and get endless screw threads, for vices and clamps, etc etc?
Does anyone have the tool needed to make the threading or know where you can get such a tool, that is bigger. Are the carabtec's Wood Thread Boxes any good?
Also is 1.5" a big enough thread for a sturdy wood vice thread?

Sorry I didn't manage to stick it out for the full day, last time (and No... my ^%#*in' brother didn't show. ) but it looks like it was all full-steanm ahead.
So, you settled on the trenched vise instead of one with the the runners bolted on underneath? Fair enough. Next time you're down at Chris's, if he gives me a hoy I'll be more than happy to come along and spend another day pointing out mistakes after you've made them.

Skew that sounds good, we are getting together again this Saturday (tentative) maybe you can join us then?
We made the trench relatively easy moving, so that it has space to shrink, and move. If it is a little to lose then we will add runners bolted on underneath.
Best to point out the mistake before we make them us young fellows need all the help we can get.
Any ideas on the wooden thread?

Here is a photo of the wooden screw that gregoryq has.
Nice now I need another one, or make two new ones.

Looks interesting, and with endless potential for sizes, however I am not setup with any power tools. I also do not know anyone who would be willing to put in the time in the jig and the messing around with the router, just to get two screws.
Maybe I should just ask IanW if he can make me two screws for my needs and for how much $$.
