Default Some amazing work in Japan

In Japan at the moment, and thought I would share some of the amazing work I saw last weekend. Up here with the aim of having a look at the annual national tategu competition and display (this year in Akita Prefecture, one of the more northern prefectures in Japan's main island of Honshu), and to pick up some specialist planes I ordered in March. Successful on both counts.

The display was amazing, to say the least. These pieces are a couple of my favourites. Both won major prizes, the first the Prime Minister's Prize. The craftsmanship in all of the display pieces was breathtaking. The PM Prize winner was valued at about $65,000, and the second piece (screen) at over $110,000 (although this one wasn't for sale). I'd say the PM Prize winner's piece would be snapped up very quickly.

The number of individual kumiko in most of the pieces numbered in the tens of thousands. Very inspiring.

Absolutely amazing. The differant colours are interesting. Is it natural wood colour or stained.

(Can you bring my back some big calligraphy brushes for my pottery? ) (I have one that a friend gave my about 20 years ago. Sadly I might have to declare it dead. )

The woodworkers answer to the perennial quilter's question "Why would anyone cut up perfectly good timber into little pieces, just to stick it back together again?"
