Default the angle of self supporting wine bottle holders??

I was in Echuca yesterday (buying some burls) and wandered into the woodturners shed/shop on the wharf, where I noticed he was selling small blocks of wood with bevelled bottoms and an angled hole in them that when a bottle of wine is put in the hole it supports the block to stand by itself.

As I have a few old railway sleepers sitting doing nothing but collect spiders I was thinking about making some of these as gifts and wondered if anyone out there had made them and what was the angle of both the base and the hole for the bottle neck. I can just make them by trial and error but.....................

It is essential that the neck of the bottle is canted downwards at an angle sufficient to ensure that all but the dregs are decanted, immediately, into one's wine glass.

Of course for this to work without wasting precious gargle juice, it is first necessary to purchase some of these

It's 45 degrees and the hole is 45 degrees as well and starts about 19.5 cm up the piece of wood.

Watch that 45 degrees! The height, depth and number of bottles will also affect that angle. The key is that the contact point (weight bearing) on the neck of each bottle must be lower than centre of the base of the bottle, otherwise the bottles slip out ...and that would be against our religion.

Whatever the correct angle might be, the centre of gravity of the rack must fall in front of and below the centre of gravity of the top bottle (because if it were the only bottle its centre of gravity is the furthest forward). I wish I had a diagram.

The depth of the rack must be such that it stands up without any bottles, i.e. unladen centre of gravity can't be in front of the foot area.

All the above assumes that the top of the rack leans forward. Sorry I don't have a definitive design, but them's the rules!

This doesn't sound right to me, I would have thought 50 to 60 degrees. I'd be keen to see what the outcome is, and find out what other people have found...

My wine stand is for 2 bottles, the end is cut at 40degrees to the face of the timber, 2 x 40mm diameter holes are bored at 55 degrees to the face and are 105mm and 225 mm from the base,
    cheers, Fletty

Mine is for one bottle and is cut exactly at 45 degrees. The hole matches the angle exactly and the hole begins 19.5cm from the base.
