    Default Angled dovetails (not canted)

    Hi,

I'm getting back into woodworking after a fair break, and have set myself a project with a few challenges and techniques to stretch myself and learn some new techniques.

One aspect requires angled dovetails, so looking for some tips/pointers on this.

The angle is a splayed angle between two sides, not canted (as is usual for angled dovetails in say a serving tray. So say looking at a drawer from above, the sides join at an angle other than 90 degrees. Vertically they're meeting at 90 degrees. I hope that makes sense!

The box I am making has 6 sides so 4 obtuse angles where the sides join (so a hexagon from above.

Finally to the question...what's the best way to mark out dovetail joints for hand-cutting (and, will they work? hadn't thought of that!). Can't quite picture the laying out myself and couldn't find anything on a Google search.

Any tips or links to help appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Darren

I've never done it myself but I would cut the ends at 60° and mark out as normal. Make sure you mark everything well so you know how it all goes back together.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I agree with ncarcher. Cut the end of the board that will have the pins cut in it to the finished angle. Then when you mark out the pins in the usual way, you should be able to transfer across and cut the tails.

Don't forget to post pics, and I'm keen to hear if anyone has other ideas too.
    Cheers,
    Shannon.
