G'Day Jerry,
I too dug out under my house with a pick and shovel and am still doing it as I need more room.
Our house was built in 1950 and has a large round front steps so my 5 year old grand daughter told everyone Nan & pop live in a tower house.
When I started my workshop it got called the Dungeon ( under rhe tower ) and has stuck. We get some looks if someone turns up and the wife says "He's down in the Dungeon".
I have found the worst comments come from people who are not really interested in my work or think it is over priced.
The most common comment is "you don't charge enough" but that is always from Non buyers, the buyers never seem to offer more.
Catch Ya

Have had someone baulk at a $70 pen and said they could make it themselves... I said no worries, $500 for starter lathe, $150 for chisels, $25 for a mandrel, $8 for correct bushes, $50 for sand papers (include MM or acrylic finishing pads), $50 for glues, $50 for finishing products, $18 for the kit... you enjoy your $70 pen that you have made yourself.
CorbsIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Annoyance
Well said STAR and Corbs.
Stirlo you mignt need a haircut!
I get similarly annoyed when people accuse me of being "lucky" to own my own home, to have travelled and to have my shed, machinery and tools. Well of course that is BS in spades for any of us in this position - unless we had won a lottery or art union.
I'm lucky, however, to be blessed by being charming, witty and good looking!

I have people that call them self ..."friends" wanting jobs done for free. I used to drop every thing and do it, now I say I will have to charge and you will be at the bottom of my work to do list. They have gone away
Now I do have a friend who plaits rope to make reins, and head stalls for horses. He nearly always wins with his work at the local shows. So when he charges $100.00 for an article some people ask how long did it take to do it, he answers with his age "about 70 years"

Hi Jerry, I usually agree with them when they say I'm lucky and it only took me 67 years to get there

It used to annoy me until I realised its only the fools that say that.
And why should I let a fool annoy me?

You? made that!
quite condescending, but then I like surprising people
but then it does occasionally give me the pips, I like to think they are jealous

I'd argue against that last one
The comment I get is, "You made that?" (in a suprised way, probably because of my age)
What annoys me is people who have no idea about woodworking and ask how I made something;
Person: How'd you make that?
Me: On a lathe
Person: What's that?
Or they ask a question that requires a long and technical answer that they wouldn't understand

you can have all the tools in the world
you can have a workshop the size of the grand canyon
you could have millions in the bank
but none of it means squat.....if you dont have the ability to use it properly
