Almost done with the artists paintbrush box
Just thought Id let you know that its near completion... FINALLY!!
Taken quite awhile to get to this point with the last table takin up valuable box makin and lathe learnin time what with ops and time at the mine its taken too flamin long
But I got the fingers for the hinges done today which was a journey in itself... will cut them to shape and fit the wooden skewer thing tomorrow... with any luck I may even get to fit them!! then its just make a clasp for the front and a tad of finishin and whallah! bobs yer friggin uncle!!
Oh... the box? the base sides are Sepiature (malay hardwood with an amazing grain pattern) Jarrah base Huon pine feet... top is Jarrah strips over Banksia curved ends... the handle is Jarrah and Kapur shaped as a paint brush with Birdseye Maple brush embedded with a peice of Turquoise theres also a Maple palete under the paint brush tip embedded with gems
The hinges will be if all goes according to plan... Jarrah and Sheoak the latch Im hoping to make with a piece of Tuart so that the peg can be of a redwood
Ive approached the hinges slightly different than the ways Ive seen others do them in that I first cut quater inch strips on the table saw then cut the 3 inch lengths on the bandsaw and have now glued them up... will be shaping them tomorrow cause the top overhangs the base sides the hinges will be sanded to fit so the lift is smooth so the one attached to the sides will be thicker than the one fitted to the top... will be interesting!!
Just thought to let you know this flamin mongrel bung knee aint stoppin me from meanderin an hobblin out to the cave!
Anyways it looks great so far! Hopefully pics tomorrow! if not then Sundy

Some pics pre-hinges
Okay glassplopper ...I wombled out and bought it down to take a couple of happy snappies ... now the hinges arent done yet weve been busy sorting a few other things out and will be for the rest of the day so hopefully I will get the time to fiddle faddle with the hinges tomorrow ...anyways!
Number 1... The artists paintbrush box
Number 2... The inside the storage area hopefully will enable her to hold some small paints etc
Number 3... The roughed out hinges
Number 4... The box from a different angle... its a buggar tryin to show the waving action of the grain of the Sepiature
Number 5... The lid showing the Torquoise on the tip, Opal at the top, Ruby next to that Citrine next and Amythist just before the Malachite
As I said hopefully I can go out and complete it tomorrow todays stuffed for anything remotely related to the shed
And yes its got a sacrificial coat of varnish over it which will be sanded back once the hinges are done and ready... however the good thing is it gives one an idea of what its final look will be
Oh and Ive decided to do a Huon Pine plate thingy for the hanging down lock part at the front (which I am yet to make of course ) with her initials... should stand out well with the colors
Anyways theres where Im at at this time
DAMNED CAMERA!! the stupid thing gets the shakes every time I use it... works fine for everyone else shakes when I touch it! Ruddy Fuji S3500 digimal camera!! time to get a newy one that doesnt get the shakes when I touch itBelieve me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Strewth mate, she should be rapt with that! The paintbrush handle & palette with stones are a nice touch.
So, the box is Sepiature and the feet are Huon.... yeah, looking good... the lid is Jarrah, OK... but you say the palette inlay is maple? Man, I'd love to get my hands on a piece like that big enough to make a box!

The palete is the curley kidney shaped bit under the paintbrush... a single small peice of Maple veneer
ID love a peice of maple big enough to make a box too! but Im stuck with Jarrah and Sepiature oooh and Kapur Maranti Durian Banksia Sheoak Tuart Karri Plum Pear Mulberry etc etc ...and some sort of really light timber which I havent worked out what it is yet but its pale in color (sorta white no real color at all) has no feature to speak of and is light as buggary the stamp was washed off when I got the planks dahmnit!
Anyway cheers!... And thanks ooh red timber whispering one
When its done I'll get young Tiffany to come over and take some pics with her wangdangdoodle of a camera that never shakes even when I touch it!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Wild Dingo,
Oh what a super surprise, can you finish it for the 26th, landing at Melbourne and airlines and customs won't let me bring in my paints or wooden items.
Oh well I will have to make do with some plastic stuff from your art supply stores.
No doubt from the pictures the recipient will get much pleasure from your superb craftsmanship.woody U.K.

Shane,
great stuff mate. Looks like you had to do much more than simple wood butcherin' to turn out such a great box.

Nah Al I think it was the few drinks that caused it to shake!! If Ive told the blasted camera once Ive told it a thousand times CAMERAS DONT DRINK!!
Anyway... its coming along steady... I managed to cut her initals out of Huon and got them on the box and have finally taken the bull by the horns and made some hinges... easy as! so whats left? well gotta drill and put the skewer through the hinge then final sand and finish it
As for the gems well initially it was going to be a trademark type thing every peice gettin a small gem on it somewhere... then I thought buggar that it will cost me more than I earn to do that so now theyre only on special items
I think these two pics show the grain pattern best...
