Yes framing seems to be expensive no matter what!

I haven't experienced moisture problems, but I've always left a space. I couldn't tell you why...maybe it attracts condensation? I've never used PVC either, so maybe you're safe. In that case I'd do as suggested above and add an extra piece of timber to screw the D-rings into. Alternatively you could use 5mm plywood as your backing.

Thanks for the suggestion of plywood - it had never occurred to me. When I googled I found these guys (http://www.rankinetimber.com.au/index.html) who have a branch just down the road from me so will pay them a visit!

Just to report on the method I ended up going with. I wasn't keen to fiddle about glueing extra wood to the back of the board so I decided to give the bolt and nut method a try. I countersunk on the side the art is sandwiched against so the bolt head was flush with the wood surface. I don't know whether it's because the countersink bit is blunt but I had to press quite hard so I never felt in any danger of pressing right through the board. Once I secured the D ring with the nut it felt very secure to me and I didn't have to worry about over tightening and stripping the thread as with a screw approach. So I'm happy with the outcome and wouldn't have thought of it were it not for posting on this forum. Many thanks to everybody who offered advice. Now if I can just get some buyers for the art work that is now hanging in the local cafe gallery!
