    Default Australia Anybody?

Well first of all this if my first post on this forums, I'd just like to say Hi and say how great I think this forum is. I've been reading it for quite some time. I am currently on my second year of my appreticeship, but I have been doing cabinetmaking as a carreer for about four years now, I have been going to SAIT (Southern Instatute of Technology) for my appreticeship, also it has been a hobby of mine since I was a wee young lad in grade 8. I am currently 23 years old now. I dont think I could be anymore happy with what im doing with my life I love working with wood.

In january I am getting my work visa to goto Australia, Even though its a long ways away I am the type of person who likes to plan somewhat in advance, and was wondering if any of you guys know of any woodworking Shops in austrailia. I'd much rather keep on learning then having to take a break from my career and bust tables at a restaurant.

    any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!!

    Phatdub

    Welcome to the site.

January is not that far away so It's probably a good idea to start planning now.

Not sure what type of visa you have. Is it a working holiday type one or what?

    If you're after further education, this place has a pretty good reputation;

If you come to Australia as a tradesman, or as a competent carpenter/cabinet maker, you will get work. This country is short of tradespeople and there are projects all over the place that are delayed for lack of them.
You could make contact with employment agancies from Canada and, probably, walk into a job the day you arrive.
Get your hands on newspapers from each of our States, in WA that would be The West Australian, look for the names of the agencies that are advertising and make contact.
A lot of papers are online and a good start would be http://www.news.com.au/ which has papers in most States.
    Good hunting.

It only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

What Robert said is correct. There is a skill shortage over here at the moment.

If you've decided on a city that you plan to base yourself in then a possible avenue might be to look up joinery/cabinet shops in that city's Yellow Pages and send out a few snail mail enquires.

    Just a thought

also look at www.careerone.com.au as it has all of the jobs that get listed in major australian newspapers.

Im on the Gold Coast and i know we struggle looking for good tradespeople. Getting a job shouldnt be a problem.

also look up the yellow pages and ring around.

You should be ok getting a job, just be careful because there a fair few shonks out there and they may try to rip you off only paying you $50 a day, so be careful. In Aust december/ januray is the hoilday shut down period so you may have to wait till feburay when things fire up again.

You could work as a labourer when you first get here there is few labour hire firms around that pay decnet money and they do not mind travers. In NSW you will have to get a "green card" (OH&S ticket) before working on site, this takes about half a day.

In Qld you'll need a general site safety induction ticket before working on site. All larger sites also have their own specific site safety induction.
