    Default Australian standards

    Hi, Can anyone tell or sent me in plain terms what the Australian Standards are for wooden toys.

    If you can drop em from the top of the shed roof and they dont break, then they meet Australian standards

    Off the top of my head:

    Must be a foodsafe finish. (ie. no lead paint)

    For children under 3yo, no part can be smaller than 35mm (the size of a table-tennis ball, or will fit into a 35mm photo film container)


    It's really a can o' worms, a lot depends on what type of toy, as there're different regulations for each category. A quick read of this PDF by Victorian Consumer Affairs will give you some idea...

    Do those size restrictions include fasteners? So everything would have to be glued?

    Yes. Anything that can come free and end up in the kids mouth. I vaguely recall someone mentioning that screws are OK if they're counter-sunk and a dowel plug glued in. I think.

    (I'm no expert; a while back I was looking at making kids toys and did some research. In the end, I decided not to go ahead as what I wanted to make would've needed major revisions and become a chore instead of fun. I've forgotten most of what I learned about it... )
