Ball Peen Sledge Hammer
I am wondering if anyone can tell me what industries used a Ball Peen Sledge Hammer I have come across three recently but had never seen them before. One was a lightish weight maybe 7lbs at the Hand tool sale. The other is amongst the sledges at the smith I go to, and the third I bought at a market on the weekend and weighs about 20lbs.
I tried googling it to see if I could find if they were for a specific task or profession in the past. I know they could be useful for many things, but what were they made for.
Any hints???…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Most of the balcksmith's I know have one or two, but then there is the old standard to go by the bigger the job the bigger the hammer

i have never seen "pien" but always knew it as "pein" ... checking the oxford dictionary though and it knows only "peen" and "pane" , "pane" being a very recent addition (1831) ... the earliest uses of it showed "pen" ... the most interesting quote (to me), not the earliest, was from 1688, "... hammers having no claw or slit in the pen ... " suggesting the claw of a hammer was also known as a peen
suggested derivation is from swedish: pen, danish: peen fine neat or thin ... it has earlier usage as a verb "to beat thin with a hammer"
for what it is worth

After a third round of haggling I paid a bit more than I wanted and a lot less than he was asking. How did you go with your coke deal?
I guess big rivets is a possibility. I'll see if it is any good at making hammers tomorrow.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

The Blacksmiths Coke you have to put in the Blacksmith bit or all the same jokes keep coming up
Yeah I did well, 200kg for $150 . What other choice is there ?? nothing I know of .
What I did like there was the way the forges work , they are great . I asked about the cleaning of the fire and was shown how to do it with a poker . I was surprised at how easy it looked . It solves a problem Ive been having keeping the fire going continuously in the forge at work.
I only ever use it once every couple of years , want to do more though.
Making hammers with that , you will be having a good nights sleep afterwards.

Pretty sure their 40 kg each, They feel it , they're dang heavy !! though I haven't weighed them . And I bought five.
Just took it the way it was . All the guys there were using it at that size , it seemed ok .
